Yes, it did...at first.
I running change shortly after the release of the toy changed this.
The faceplate-lacking version was wildly unpopular at the time and is now kind of sought after due to its scarcity.

I'm fairly certain the colors were exactly the same.
You got that backwards. The first release of Energon Optimus Prime had the mouth, whereas the mouthplated version was the running change. I remember this very well because I was so mad that they gave Prime a mouth on his Energon toy, but then I heard they'd be releasing a mouthplated version later on with certain numbers imprinted on the box's underside to identify this running change. So, I searched many stores, turning each Optimus Prime box upside-down, looking for these numbers, but to no avail, and had no choice but to get the ugly mouthed version.Counterpunch wrote:cingularman31 wrote:Energon Prime (Hasbro) didn't have a faceplate either

The faceplate-lacking version was wildly unpopular at the time and is now kind of sought after due to its scarcity.BUT, the mouthplated one with the numbers finally started turning up many months later (but I had already gotten the other one and there was no way I'd be allowed to get a second of the same exact figure of that size
).

Read what Counterpunch wrote again. He said the faceplate version came second, just like you're saying.

But, I did notice several missing. While ya'll did cover all the Optimus figures, I did also say "Convoy" figures, which isn't limited to just "Optimus Prime" and "Optimus Primal" figures. So, just to make the list bigger, I'll throw these in:
17. G1 Rodimus Prime/Rodimus Convoy
18. Joe Convoy*
19. Energon Rodimus/Superlink Rodimus Convoy
20. Cybertron Override/Nitro Convoy
21. Cybertron Scourge/Flame Convoy
22. Cybertron Evac/Live Convoy
23. Cybertron Metroplex/Megalo Convoy
24. Legends of Cybertron Scourge
25. Legends of Cybertron Evac
26. Titanium Rodimus Prime
And some other Optimus figures missing:
27. McDonald's Beast Machines Optimus Primal
28. Burger King Cybertron Optimus Prime
29. Legends of Cybertron Optimus Prime
And more redecos from other molds:
30. Orion Pax
31. Dawn of Future's Past Optimus Primal
32. Legends Class Classics Leo Prime
And an Optimus-like figure:
33. Optimus Minor
*A.K.A. BW Megatron. Can be represented by any of his purple T-Rex figures - sure, I know it was a false name, but it's too funny to ignore
