so if optimus has prime in his name.. then he must have been an original transformer just like the fallen right? and that wud make optimus and the fallin brothers too.

Optimus is a descendant of the Dynasty of Primes, the original rulers of Cybertron. The Fallen was once part of the Dynasty. So far the Primes seem to be the most powerful beings in the cosmos since only a Prime can kill another (i.e. since The Fallen and Optimus are the last surviving creatures with the Prime heritage, only Prime can kill The Fallen).

Prime is basically a title as well. One is born a Prime, like how one can only be born into a dynasty in order to claim legitimacy to it, hence the name Dynasty.

I have never understood why only a prime could kill the fallen,and not the military weapon which took out devastator for example.
Plus Prime could killed by a normal transformer or by an other reason :/

May be they just meant his special powers wouldnt work on another Prime. Why he didnt just use his staff toss Prime around when they fought. Sure other things could potentially defeat the fallen, just the odds were horribly against them.

The Fallen and his brother Primes seem to possess, with their more "tribal, pharaoh" look, manipulating powers akin to that of Magneto or Jedi/Sith. Part of it I suspect is due to the "control" they have over other beings since they are the first rulers of Cybertron. Particularly connected to this is their subtle influencing of others, like The Fallen to Megatron and in the movie, the guidance of the hieroglyphs inside Sam's head leading to the Tombs. And obviously, the revelation itself when the six spirit Primes decide Sam is the man.

I don't believe any others except Primes can influence the mind on such a significant scale.

which means he always wasnt the leader until he had the matrix of leadership
for example hot rod changed into Rodimus prime

Beign a "Prime" appears to be a the equivalent of "nobility" in this continuity. Maybe Optimus started as a low-ranked "prime", but he's still a Prime.

IDW publishing did come out with an official prequel storyline for the revenge of the fallen. . . it is there that the info about optimus' and megatron's and even the fallen's origin was explained. the general story goes like this;

The allspark gave life to the species of the primes as the first civilization on cybertron. they were inter-dimensional beings. Much like in the movie, the fallen can jump/warp thru space. to sustain the allspark though they needed to harvest energon from stars. Although the primes were interdimensional beings the still needed help to find energon sources. The allspark then created the race of cybertronians that can transform to help the primes gather energy for the allspark.

Megatron was the military leader on cybertron in charge of safeguarding the planet. Optimus was in charge of the science division. During that time the allspark was once again running low in energon and have been acting strangely. The science division was busy digging up artifacts that might help them resolve this problem. Optimus' team founda site where there were fragments and one intact artifact that is shaped like a 'V' and had a mark on it. Megatron ordered Optimus to deliver the intact artifact to his quarters. Optimus obliged hesitantly. It turned out that the intact artifact was the sarcophagus of the FAllen. The fallen was imprisoned there. While the broken pieces where from the other primes. Due to his contact with the fallen's sarcophagus, Megatron fell victim to the fallens manipulation.

Megatron becam corrupt and merciless. He was brainwashed into conquering other systems to locate the star destroyer for the fallen. Optimus defied him. Thus, the cybertronian wars.

Optimus was linked to the primes because on the pieces of sarcophagi there was a constant mark. And this mark also appears on Optimus' ear. (The side of his head. . u can see this from the movie poster specialy for the first movie)

Turns out that he was the last prime. Hidden from his own destiny to keep him safe while the others were battling the fallen.

that's about the gist of the prequel. . i left out bits that isn't really necessary. . hehehehe. .
