in G1 there were bots of many differant sizes from ruffly the size of a human to the huge guardian bots it is presumible that the smaller bots would go along for the ride in the bigger bots, and act as a second set of eyes and the smaller hands could get to places and circuits that the bigger bots couldnt reach. rumble and frenzy come to mind as rather destructive examples of tghe smaller bots.

I just thought the windshield/cockpit was the forward sensor array. If a driver can or should fit in there is just a matter of usefulness or size appropriateness.

First scene we see in G1 animated at all is Bumblebee riding inside Wheeljack's van mode thingie. So, yeah. I can see the smaller ones getting rides.

Also, transformation wasn't inherent, but designed later in their evolution by the Autobots. before that they had vehicles. So I don't see why they wouldn't design their alt modes with that in mind.

I would assume that, as per the G1 and Exodus explanation, that cockpits are the remnant of the Cybertronian's days as Quintesson slaves.

Now, as to why a newly-created transformer like Cyclonus would need a cockpit for his Cybertronian jet mode...

1) Unicron could have used some vehicle he had on file that he felt had been pretty good.

2) Galvy just needed something to ride in for the movie.

But really, even in the movie-verse you get the idea that the Cybertronians started off as machines before the allspark came along and gave them life, so it could very well just be that they've always had them, and couldn't really imagine not having them, even though they are technically useless. Guys, just look down your shirts and you'll find two examples of this.

I agree that it doesn't make sense, but I like vehicle modes, even Cybertronian ones, to have cockpits, so I don't mind.

In the cartoon the TF's couldn't transform into vehicles when the Quints were around. They first started transforming after the Quints left and the first war with the Decepticons started.

It was all mentioned in FFoD when Rodimus went on his Matrix induced acid trip.

if memory serves me correct, in beast machines optimal megatron's spark was housed in the cockpit canopy of the jet mode. very obvious weakpoint but maybe that's one reason?
