Today's trivia question.
How long is a light year?
A. 1AU
B. A light year isn't a measure of distance
C. 9.5 trillion kilometers
D. 6.8 trillion miles
Let's see... The speed of light or
c is 299,792,458 meters a second, and there are 60 * 60 * 24 * 365.25 = 31,557,600 seconds in a year. In short, rounded up it's 9.5 trillion kilometers, or 5.9 trillion miles. So it's C.
An AU or Astronomical Unit is the mean distance between the Earth and the Sun, and a light year is actually a measure of distance, defined as the distance light travels over the course of an Julian Earth year.
