will the Fans Project Bruticus set go with this or is this the wrong set?

Doesn't work with that at all. You need the Target exclusive ROTF Bruticus or the Energon version. Look up Bruticus maximus.

its not the same thing by a long sho, but if you want a PCC bruticus you can buy the Crankcase and destrons set and then use the helicopter and plane from that set as limbs with bombshock. It's pretty sweet. Then buy the rallybots and doubleclutch set and use those drones with crankcase. You get PCC Menasor. The rest of the bits and can use to make a fire with or soemthing

although it doesnt it brings up an interesting idea. what if some third party came out with miniature figs that could complement the commanders its definitely doable and might sell pretty well. just a thought.
