Dreamwaveverse - Future Direction?

Postby K-9 » Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:08 am

I've just been rereading all my old back-issues, and have once against got to the brain hurt that was the suddern cancelation of the Dreamwave Universe in their Ongoing / War Within series.

Now i don't know about anyone else, but i found the most annoying part of this crappy situation was that the storylines were just starting to get interesting, so i was wondering if there had ever been any indictation as to how the future storylines were gonna pad out? Were we ever going to discover the great secret that Megatron did? What was at the bottom of the pit from the Sunstorm saga? Was Bumper evil? Would Prowl ever stop whining?

So if any of this information ever did come out of the writers, please post it below so i can at least hopefully get some closure...

Weapon: Particle Beam Cannon
It would have all ended in a TFTM rehash.

Just look at all the signs:
- They were turning the Dinobots into retards under the command of Hot Rod.
- Springer gained the rank of Arcee's boyfriend, he must have pissed somebody off to be demoted from being the leader of the Wreckers.
- Unicron ate Lithone, it was a exact carbon copy of the movies scene (how original....).
- They barely used any bots that had toys beyond 1987. Comic only characters got completely ignored in favor of cartoon characters (best of both cartoons and comics my ass).

Well there were thos unfinished pics and pages that were realesed by the artists right after DW got banktruped.
Oh and the WW, I met Simon Furman once and asked him on that.
He said that He would love to continue that.
I'm shure that will happen since IDW let him do the same with the BW.

Actually, Chris Ryall at IDW stated that they were moving forward, not back, so the old DW stuff is gone. He said they were trying to create their own moving forward. So you may see some older designs that are similar to WW, but they should not be exactly the same...notice Grimlock in the Shockwave Spotlight looks very similar, and they still have the Dyno name, but as I read it, they were not supposed to be exactly the same.

But Prime looked very WWish, I think.
But maybe one day it may happen. But I like the way IDW is going more mature and cooler than anything I've read of the TF untill now. And I kinda like the Humans.

Yeah, i like what they're doing with their new direction, and i also like how the designs are slightly different. I just figured it as even transformers must fancy a change of look every once in a while. Thats whi i always find characters like Shockwave who keep the same design for millions of years odd, in all that time there haven't been any upgrades or technological developments that would have been logical additions to his body?

It's true, because Brad Mick couldn't comprehend that fans might want, you know...something DIFFERENT?

As for where the comic was going, the writers are so up themselves they REFUSE to tell fans because they feel that fans shouldn't find out for free what one day they might be able to get money for. I know Dreamwave shafted them with payment, but come on - being jerky with fans who are actually complimentary about your work (and there ain't that many of them!) is surely not the way to go.

Forget Dreamwave, think IDW :)

To disregard my DW-hate for a moment, there are also the signs we got from upcoming hints and comic covers e.g. female Autobots (thank goodness we avoided that one), Prime and Elita-1, and I remember reading Hot Rod/Springer/Arcee would be a love triangle and Sunstreaker would be gay.

No one in their right mind can honestly say, based on this, that it was sad Dreamwave went bankrupt. Honestly, Brad Mick was trying to turn it into a (poor man's) Eastenders/Coronation Street! (for international fans, insert domestic, dull soap here), just with giant robots. Sigh, the whole debacle should be struck off the record. Dreamwave output made "Inter-planetary Wrestling Championship" and "Cash & Car-Nage" from good ol' Uncle Bob look like the pinnacle of good TF fiction...

He says this, and yet they put out Target: 2006. Funny, that...

Anyways, I don't think it would have been complete TF:TM rehash. I'm willing to bet that those 'secrets of Cyberton' would have likely wound up culminating with the discovery that Cybertron is actually hosing the spark of Primus in it, or some such. I'm pretty sure they did intend to incroporate some old comic elements into their work, it just ended too soon.

Bloody well seconded!

For all my criticisms of the Dreamwave comic lines, I will admit that the ongoing series (that turned-out to be not-so-ongoing) had an interesting thing or two going for it. But, I agree with the IDW approach of starting fresh and setting itself apart...it doesn't hurt every so often to try and breathe a bit of life into an old series, after all.

I have to agree, so far, they are not annoying!

I bought the Spotlight #1 with a Shockwave cover. It was the VOLUME 1 graphic novel, not the issue. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I also bought Escalation #3, also pretty good.

My question is, how the f*** do they expect people to pay $19.99 an issue when they have Spotlight, Infiltration, Escalation, Devestation, Stormbringer, etc.

I mean, these comics are good, but NO comic is that good!

I could understand if it was the COLLECTED stories from issues 1-4 of Infiltration, for example, for that price...but EACH?!

That is mighty rich for my blood.

Anyone else feel the same?

Anyone? Anyone?

I know this, but what is a "howl story arch", exactly?

And Escalation #3 seems to be one part of a larger story, not made up of several issues.

Or am I still missing something?

Trying to clear things up here, and get rid of the massively long quoted piece...

Escalation trade #'s 1-5 $19.99
(Each individual issue on the shelf $2.99)

Transformers: Spotlight Trade (Shockwave, Nightbeat, Hot Rod, Six Shot, and Ultra Magnus) $19.99

(Each individual Spotlight should be $2.99 or thereabouts)

Infiltration trade #'s 1-5 $19.99
(Each ind. issue $2.99, but hard to find!)

Stormbringer trade #'s 1-5 $19.99

I guess what I am unsure of is where $19.99 per individual issue comes in. If you buy the retailer incentive covers for each, it certainly can easily be that much, so I wouldn't recommend that, but as the individual issues come out they should be $3-$4 thereabouts...

YouFearGalvatron wrote:My question is, how the f*** do they expect people to pay $19.99 an issue when they have Spotlight, Infiltration, Escalation, Devestation, Stormbringer, etc.

These should only be $3 per individual issue, and $19.99 for the trade that includes ALL the issues per that story arc.

So my question is, what did you buy for $19.99? If you paid that much for an individual issue that is not an incentive/rare cover than stop buying those, and look for a better source!!! :P

As for the DW story line.. I was lucky enough to get to talk to Don, and he was showing me some of the art for the Femmebots issue that I was anticipating... he told me that the fem fatales were going to be just that... a group of bots made by the quints to get trick the bots, and then to kill them... YEAH BLACK WIDOWS!!!! It really sounded cool to hear him talk about the story line...

As far a IDW I like only haveing one story arc again.. and not fifty at once... well other than that Bumblebee hanging out with John Henry bit... I am only annoyed at the constant onslaught of covers and each book having at least one incentive...
