I personally am rooting for FansProject all the way. It's totally unfair what Takara's doing - I mean, what are they gonna do next? Masterpiece Springer? - and besides, making a Masterpiece (which are supposed to be uber-detailed) out of one - well, two - of those overly-simplistic 1986 toys just looks silly.

So yeah. Which do you think will be better: the third-party upgrade kit for Classics Rodimus, or the new official "Masterpiece" version that creates its own Rodimus?

It's unfair that Takara is making a character that they have every right to make? They probably had Rodimus in the works before Fans Project announced Protector.

I'm planning on getting the Fansproject Rodimus upgrade first. I already have a shelf set aside for the Season 3 cast. I've got Classics Ultra Mangus with the CC armor, animated Arcee, Fansproject Springer (Warbot), Animated Blurr (he's a place holder until Generations comes), Cybertron Metroplex, TRU Preceptor, and FP Nightbeat as a placeholder for whenever Generations Kup comes out. So yeah, I really want the Season 3 cast to be completed sooner than later.
Also, I think the Fransproject Protector set just looks cooler overall. It has a better looking Missile bay for the trailer, Guardian/Roller, and room for the FP targetmaster figure as well.
I would get the Masterpiece Rodimus, but at $200 I don't think he's quite worth it yet. I do have other Masterpieces, but I mostly just keep them in the box.

MP Rodimus all the way.
FP's add on set is very nice and I'm getting it. But MP Roddy is accurate in all of it's modes. features the glasses, buzzsaw, and Matrix accessories associated with Roddy, and is generally much more badass than I'd ever expect a G1 Rodimus Prime toy to be.
FP's upgrades are good. Very good. I love the armor idea. However, they are (obviously) not accurate. Plus the alt. mode is a super sports car towing a large trailer. That can't be helped, but it's definately wrong.

I think the original poster meant the "unfair" comment to be humor, that how I took it anyway.
Kind of comparing apples to oranges really. I plan on getting both, the Takara MP for my MP shelf of course and Protector for my neo-classics shelf. MP is supposed to be a highly screen accurate incarnation of the character, not an update. Whereas Protector it meant to be the updated version of the character. There is plenty of room for theses two to coexist, but obviously with them coming out so close together they are going to draw a lot of comparisons.

I don't quite get the humour from what the OP typed...

From what was typed, it seems as though the OP has little to no idea what the MP line's purpose actually is.

I am the op.
Okay, okay. I do understand that the point of the MP line is to make a super-show-accurate "ultimate" depiction of a character. Maybe I misspoke. What I mean is, for that reason, the MPs have always been hyper-detailed, right? But a toy that tries to capture every detail of G1 Rodimus Prime's character model is like a CD that tries to capture every good song Miley Cyrus has recorded. Now, I don't dare imply that G1 Rodimus Prime is a bad design, it's just that it doesn't feel like it's up to being made into an MP. I'd rather have an MP Ironhide instead.

To understand the purpose of the MP line, you have to understand who it is being marketed for. It's a high end toy line by TakaraTomy for the Japanese Transformers collector market. MP figures are ideally Japanese fan favourites so in this case, Hot Rodimus/Hot Rod and Rodimus Convoy/Rodimus Prime is an understandable choice after Convoy, Starscream, Megatron, and Grimlock.
The primary intent of MP figures is to be modern realizations of classic G1 Transformers toys using the highest level of contemporary toy engineering. This should result in toys that have a significant degree of likeness to the character in humanoid robot mode as well as the alternate mode, a rare achievement in G1 toys, which often were fine for likeness in alt mode but not bot mode. So a high level of detail simply comes about because as a high end toy, such an attribute should be inherent to its design.
So to address the topic, which is posing the question of which is better between Protector and MP Rodimus, it's a matter of two different products made for two different purposes.
MP Rodimus is simply for fans of the G1 toy and character. The figure is for those who want to see a "perfect" version of the G1 toy that looks very much like the character they remember from the cartoon.
The Protector add on set is for those who have the Classics Rodimus figure(or any other variation of the mold) and want an updated version of a proper Rodimus Prime/Convoy in the flavour of the Classics line, which is all about taking inspiration from original designs but deviating from them to create new toys.
As I see it, neither is better than the other. They both serve to fulfill collector desires so they're both good things to me. They're not in competition with each other at all.

Better? That's all a matter of opinion. Each item has it's pros and cons, neither one is perfect. Great, but not perfect.
TakaraTomy is not being unfair. They're producing a product that they have every right to. In fact, there have been rumors of a Masterpiece Rodimus for quite a few years, and we only heard about Protector in 2008. TakaraTomy is ahead of the game by having the idea out there way before FansProject made theirs public.
Here's what I don't understand...if you're supporting FP and not TT, that's fine, but why complain about it? If it's not personally affecting you or your finances, why complain?
Aren't you just wasting your time, patience and sanity complaining about an item you'll never buy?
Or is it that you're pissed it's so expensive and can't afford it, or choose not to afford it?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just not finding a better way to convey what I'm trying to say here. Your post is coming off as bitter and angry, not ignorant and uninformed.
Ignorant and uninformed would be easy to deal with, we could easily offer you plenty of information on it so you could have the whole picture to make a decision with.
Bitter and angry with comments bordering on lashing out make you seem disagreeable and hard to reach.
If you want to support FP, that's fantastic!
If you don't want to support TakaraTomy, that's fine!
Do it for the right reasons, however. Don't do it with petulance.

Labeling the guy a troll isn't the best course of action just yet. IF he is a troll, IF, then crap like this should be punishment material.
