First Kitbash: Alternators Hoist from Dodge Ram

Postby Payner™ » Mon Feb 05, 2007 5:37 am

Hi everyone

I've been a long time lurker on the boards and after reading through various guides here at Transtopia (such as Lobo's pin removal and TFmaster's Alt Prime leg mod) I finally decided to give it a go.

I quite liked the look of the Alt Prime figure but hated the concept of it actually being prime. Even though a lot of people would of prefered it as Ironhide I've always seen it as being Trailbreaker or Hoist. I'd seen about half a dozen Hoist mods and they were all very good so I wanted to put my own spin on it. For example, none of the mods I'd seen previous had a show accurate head

To achieve my kitbash I modified Alt Prime's head with epoxy putty, used TFmaster's leg mod, modified various Bionicle parts, complety butchered an Armada Smokescreen, scratch-built a lightbar from sheet styrene, fully dissessbled the figure, keyed the parts with wet&dry, painted it with Tamiya spray paints, handpainted the orange and black details, and added some custom decals with printable water-slide paper (many thanks to my mate Bulldog over at TFLost for the SAR logo).

Anyway, enough of that here is the fruit of my labour, hope it passes!

Cannon

Considering that alternators have transformable engines that became their weapons I always had in mind that Hoist's towing assembly should do the same thing. This is why I chose Armada Smokescreen for butchering

I was surprised with it myself! It has a bottom coat of silver with a top coat of semi-translucient metallic green then finally a protective layer of gloss varnish

True to my word this is my first custom. I have been watching other people's work for a while, and it did take me forever and a day to finish th emod

Hoping that the next one will a little easier

Thanks for the kind words, Piranacon!

This is definately impressive, especially for your first build. Well done. My only complaint about it is the light bar. It would have looked better being made from clear acrylic and painted with yellow clearcoat since towtrucks have yellow "emergency" lights not blue. Other than that, it is perfect. Well done.

Wow, that is a really impressive 1st bash. I agree with tramp that a transparent lightbar would make it look that much better. Something also seemed a little off about the wheels to me. I thought it was the colour at first, but I think the rear tires may just need to be larger.

That's really nice work tho with the cannon. The bed sidebars as wings are a nice touch too.

Thanks Tramp!!

Yeah, a lot of people say that about the lightbar, the reason it's not translucient is because I had left over sytrene and wanted to use it up, and also I didn't want the connectors for the 'wings' to be visible.

Towtrucks have yellow hazard lights, not emergency lights, and my take on Hoist is that he's upgraded from a towtruck to a rescue unit, hence the blue lights (I'm in the UK, all our emergency vehicles have blue lights). :D

You mean Bluestreak?? :P

I'd thought about it, but my 'Streak is Binaltech, not an Alt and he's pretty stunning the way he is 8)

Wow, wish my first custom looked as great...or my second..or my thrid...or...never mind :?

Looks really REALLY good. Love the green (want more green TF's) and especially how it turned out.

The only thing I probably would've done different myself is the 'doors' to the trucks bed (what becomes his heels in robot mode). I think I would've removed them and installed something else. Maybe a runner for that wire you show in one of the pics.

I do agree that the siren lights would've been nice had they been clear blue, but it's a very minor issue on a very major custom.

Please, keep them coming.

Another very good Hoist! I too love that green and how it came out. You put quite an amount of work into him, and it shows. Great job. :)

I love this. It's a brilliant idea converting the crane arm into a free-standing cannon, and the metallic green paintjob is gorgeous.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. :D

Weapon: Atom-Smasher Cannon
I like you utilized the orange railings for the transformation.
