Could this be a direct affect from the mass popularity brought on be the BluRay release of the film? Who knows? But anyone with HD DVD can get a dirt cheap copy of the blockbuster movie of 2007.

Nope, this is a direct result of the massive death of HD-DVD. They had some left over and figured "what the hell, might as well try to clear some shelf space."

I'm an owner of an HD DVD player. I bought it because I thought it was a cheap alternative for next gen DVDs. I'm pretty sure that Blu-Ray is not the next leap from DVDs. The average consumer seems pretty happy with traditional DVDs, especially with DVD players that upconvert the quality. Regular DVDs look just fine on my 56" Samsung DLP on an HD DVD player.

Anyone know where I can get a copy on Betamax or Laserdisc?

And they would look just as good on a blu-ray player. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players did upconverting. The difference is Blu-ray movies are still being released. Personally while I still buy DVDs most new movies I do get I get on Blu-ray.

Ironman is far better on blu-ray than on DVD, as is Transformers even with the up conversion. The sound and picture quality both are much improved.

As for blu-ray market share and its slow growth there are a few things to consider. First Blu-ray is only about 2 years old. DVD didn't really hit its stride until about the third year after its release. Second we are hitting economic ard times. Now is not the time that the vast majority of people are going to be upgrading their entertainment systems. Lastly HD in general has been a slow build. Again most people either don't see the point of it or don't want to spend the money if they already have a perfectly good TV. As many times as i have tried to convince my grandmother to upgrade from a 36" SDTV to a 42" or 46" HDTV the majority of the time the responce I get is either "why" or "it is only 6 years old". She like most people isn't going to upgrade unless the current TV breaks, or you can convince her that there is a legitimate reason beyond because it looks better.

Most places that have any HD-DVD's left sell them at a price of about $5 anyway. There's a lot of good movies on HD-DVD and I honestly can't tell a difference in quality between the 2 rival formats. About has me tempted to get an HD-DVD/Blu-ray combo drive for my HTPC!
