We're not asking for a new mold, or even a different mold, so much as an alternate version that we know they already have and have used. It's a shame, because BotCon is usually a great time to voice such concerns, but let's not that stop us from at least trying.

Dear Hasbro:

Please please please PLEASE use the Firefly head instead of the Quickslinger head for the upcoming Blast-Off figure. I'm totally okay with him being a jet fighter instead of a space shuttle, that makes sense. But I would really appreciate a more accurate head for him.

Sincerely,
Nemesis Maximo

I'll add my opinion to the mix: I do with Blast Off used a different head, but I'm completely fine with him being a jet. Also, I initially thought Sky Lynx was a retool of Silverbolt as well. This was mainly inspired by the torso mode, which seemed to be similar to Superion and Galvatronus's torsos, but that's probably just due to the proportions, because closer analysis does reveal no shared parts or even engineering.

There is a lot of lamenting in here about the excessive re-use of molds going on in Combiner Wars and I'd like to throw out some idea's I have been kicking around in my head to help myself reconcile the re-paint/re-tool mayhem.

It's important to look at the bigger picture. Each of these toys is merely a piece of a greater concept. The concept here, is the play pattern. Combination. They are all neat enough and well made enough toys to stand alone, but they are more than that. In essence each of these toys is a triple changer. Heck, the deluxes are quad changers. It takes a lot of design and engineering to bring that all together and make it work. Some corners may need to be cut.

Here are few of my thoughts as examples.
1. Jigsaw puzzles.
Image
At the puzzle factory they probably have lets say 35 dies in varying sizes from which to die cut their puzzles. You don't hear the folks down at the retirement home complaining that, "this here dang Grand Canyon puzzle is the same as the dagblasted Arc De Triumphe puzzle we put together last month". All 450 pieces are the same, but by changing the picture you get a whole new puzzle.

2. Legos
Image
For the last 50 years Legos have remained virtually the same thing. The same bricks in a rainbow and beyond of colors. What makes them so special? Play. It's what you do with them, or how you play with them, how you, combine them, that keeps them interesting.

Bare with me here. I swear I'm bringin' it home.
3. Blockman by Takara (also known as Robolinks)
Image
Image
There were two not that different Blockmen, cast in a small variety of colors. Every set came with the exact same robot block action figures but you could combine them and a limited library of other pieces into anything you could imagine. I personally spent hours as a kid trying to make the best giant robot I could, and I had two sets with 12 total Blockmen.

Hasbro is doing a bang up job with Combiner Wars. They have created a really nice modular system that promotes the combining interplay across the entire line of toys. They've engineered fully articulated transforming action figures, that ya, all pretty much share the same form, but that make up an entire system. All this re-painting, re-shelling, re-tooling, re-hashing is giving us some pretty good diversity. They are a hell of a lot more interesting to look at than Blockman.

Hasbro isn't selling us these toys so we can fill holes in our collections. Their selling us a whole new concept to collect. An entire WORLD OF COMBINERS. And their world is at war.

Hate to crap over a well-written post, but those are terrible comparisons. I mean, the whole point of a puzzle is you're given hundreds of near-identical pieces and have to somehow figure out how it goes together. No one can possibly memorize all the pieces like that. And unlike Lego (and presumably BLockmen), Combiner Wars is limited to just sticking the smaller bots onto one bigger bot; no making castles or pirate ships or dinosaurs out of the same parts.

I kinda get what you're saying, but... no.

I would lay odds that someone used Slingshot for the mockup because it was easier to paint over white than red.

It'd be extremely silly not to use Firefly's head on the final product.

That's actually a fantastic point. If these are still hand-painted mock-ups, and if you look closely at Blast Off, it really shows, then it could just be a case of different plastics being easier or harder to paint over.

Thatmay be due to a shortage of pieces coupled with a sensation of purity. Get more Autobots (or Decepticon) for fodder, you may see more of it. Remember, most of us stull haven't gotten WAVE 3 in stores yet, and/or are waiting for Wave 2 to show up en-masse.

First off, I meant Quickslinger... I'm also watching the SKC RSL game.

That figure isn't really exclusive, but that wasn't part of my point.
I don't think it's the best choice of head sculpt.
Either way, re-using parts makes sense.

Oh I know you meant him, hence why I was referring to him the whole time. And while reusing parts may make sense, the fact that it has to be Quicksligner's because Hasbro went out of their way to make it doesn't. That's because we have no clue what went on behind the scenes to say this and many headsculpts have only been used once anyway (unlike their body). They are already reusing the entire body for Blastoff, they could have given us a different head.

Last year, we only knew of 2 combiners by the end of 2014, I dont expect this year to be any different, and plus we know Victorion too.

And kudos to that theory that the use of the Quickslinger mold was just for ease of painting he mock up.

It's also going to be prohibitively expensive, Still, I can see some neat combos down the line, especially if you like color-matched combiners.

Wave 1 Prime + Blades (arm) + Ironhide (arm) + Mirage (leg) + Smokescreen (leg)

Battlecore Prime + Alpha Bravo (arm) + Rook (arm) + Prowl (leg) + Wheeljack (leg)

It's frustrating that the mass-release peripheral Deluxes are so Autobots heavy, though. With the Air-Raid and Skydive molds, I was really expecting some Decepticon jets.

OK, what's that thing behind Bruticus' head in the official shot here? It makes it kind of look as if he has the ghost of Galvatronus' 'crown'. But the photo currently on the banner of seibertron's site does NOT have that thingy, making it look much more like G1 Bruticus' head.

When I first saw the photos, I doubted because that crown thing on the back of the head didn't make him look like Bruticus. But if it's not there, then it's OK...

Shockwave7 wrote:OK, what's that thing behind Bruticus' head in the official shot here? It makes it kind of look as if he has the ghost of Galvatronus' 'crown'. But the photo currently on the banner of seibertron's site does NOT have that thingy, making it look much more like G1 Bruticus' head.

When I first saw the photos, I doubted because that crown thing on the back of the head didn't make him look like Bruticus. But if it's not there, then it's OK...

I think its a remnant of the photoshopping, or whatever they did to make the picture. I checked the official pic against the Galvatronus on my desk and the vent detailing doesn't appear on the Galvatronus head anywhere that I can see, so I'm not actually sure what it is :???:

Assuming, that is, that those paint apps don't get dropped for budgetary reasons between now and their retail release. (I shall certainly hope that they don't, myself!)

they showed them in package in the display cases so i hope that is proof. if not, sigh...

Yeah, that was an unnecessary but excellent design alteration; what's astonishing is HOW DIFFERENT it makes him look

I have to agree with you, he looks way better than I imagined he would. This version is running a close second to the Ultra version from several years back.

Indeed, while I'm still not sure about the new front-end (I was very partial to the odd and strange military/utility vehicle designs, similar to Hotspot, as a kid) the fists just look blatant and kinda strange; the upswing being, though, is that now Onslaught can punch you as a truck   :BOOM:

While I also miss the more traditional truck cab (at first I didn't realize that was the front), I realized that the original Onslaught had his fists make the grill in vehical mode. So it's really fitting IMO.
