The backpack is unfortunate, but not a dealbreaker for me. The G1 design is all kinds of animation nonsense. There was no way he wouldn't be a shellformer of some kind and retain the look.

Interaction with smaller figures ... it's a nice touch for the kids, but it's not something I ever take advantage of. I transform my figs a bit and put them on the shelf and think of how happy I am to have them. Even light up eyes are kinda lost on me - I never use them.

In terms of pure practicality this figure, in ever way, is impractical as Hell. The size. The with and depth in both modes. And I already have no room for it.

But I can still see myself feeling good that I got it. And I can afford it. I'm just waiting for my hype factor to wear down and to look at this more impartially before I commit. If it's something I still want about a week from now I think I'll preorder. Primus help me.

$575 (1.21 GIGA(JIGA)WATTS,1.21 GIGA(JIGA)WATTS)!!! Doc, I may need that Delorean to travel through time and find the means to get that amount together by August 31st. Between the Super 7 Snake Mountain ($600+), SDCC this week and this beautiful must have screen accurate grail from my favorite childhood film, I need an extra full time job and 40 extra hours in a week to pull this off. I think the corporate big wigs have figured out that the age demographic for "disposable" income followed my generation into our dad bodies and 40+ hour work weeks. I know I shouldn't complain about the price (because I WILL get this regardless) but it should cross 30" in height and really dwarf TR Fort Max to really convince me on this particular price point. They should have offered a payment plan like Super 7 did with Snake Mountain. That was an awesome idea.

However the more I think about it, the more insane this thing appear to me. IT'S TOO FREAKING HUGE! I stopped buying titants and sold TR Fortmax for that reason. And with all the fees adding up, this would be a CAN1000$+ Transformers that I wouldn't even be able to display...

Still, I do hope that Unicron get funded and produced. I'm looking forward the inevitable in-hand video reviews.

And hey, looking at Unicron from behind in the movie, he does have some of his planet-mode crust on his back rather than it being flat like the Armada toy, so there's that.

The big shells in Armada were also depicted in the show, which made them a lot more acceptable to me. When they're tilted up like that, I think they're actually kind of cool. This new backpack on the other hand, totally breaks the illusion for me.

They're very cool indeed, and accurate for the Armada design, but they can still get in the way of the ring wings, which this G1-based toy is placing a heavy emphasis on. And who knows, maybe this pack detaches as well. In fact, now I think about it I'd be surprised if it wasn't designed to detach, because of the drop test.

Indeed, Unicron is another of those "Damnit Dery!" designs. To render it in toy form, the choices are: Make him something of a shellformer, or make him fat and round in robot mode. And speaking of round, this Unicron needs more shell than the Armada one because he doesn't have a flat-arsed planet mode.

I find interaction with other figures cool and fun to play with, but it's not really practical with Unicron, especially a GEEWUNtastic Unicron.
I admit that light-up eyes are sometimes lost on me, but usually because so often they're the wrong color.

Just in from the #SDCC2019 are some fresh views of the new Hasbro Pulse crowdfunding project Unicron! These come to us thanks to a post from TFsource on Twitter. This gives a great view of the titanic terror (who's not a Titan) both front and back and also gives us a clear view of the extra planetary pieces and 'kibble' along his back and legs. You can judge his alternate mode pieces for not being fully concealed however this appears to be an ingenious way around the problem of making a round ball turn into a giant robot. Like it or not this is lightyears ahead of his past incarnations in engineering. It's hard not to appreciate it for simply existing, and as the second Haslab project no less.

Dude there’s going to be thousands and thousands of people walking all over. That much traffic causes some rumbling. Because honestly, that GIANT thing would never, ever find it's way into standard brick-n-mortar stores. Such a figure is a high risk endeavour. So the "backed by fans" plan is the most logical way to approach things.

Plus, compared to MP Optimus Prime 3.0 that is somewhat similarly priced, Optimus would take much, much less shelf space than this insane Unicron. Plus it's Optimus freaking Prime. Not some "random nobody". Thus, why Optimus will find it's way into stores despite the CAN600$+ he will go for, but never that Unicron.

And know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd even go as far as suggesting that big boxsets like Combiner Wars sets or Titans should be online exclusives only. Maybe with free shipping if they have the deals. Because those boxes sure take a lot of space on shelves and because they are big, they often get badly distributed among individual retailers of the store chain. Plus customers at some stores act like savage apes and destroy everything in their path, making those big boxes prime targets for kicks and partial thieving.

No wonder Walmart are online only for such big collectibles.
