Custom TFP Skyquake

Postby bobby_80s » Tue Dec 18, 2012 2:52 am

Moving this from a different section of the forum. I didn't know about the custom section.

Here are photos of my work in progress custom painted dreadwing to look like skyquake.

I will add updates in about a month or less depending on when I buy skyquakes gatlinggun from shapeways and paint it. Also not sure how long shipping will be.

i made some modifications that might make transforming no more but i can always undo it.

you'll notice i added silver flares and other silver bits of extra detail on his shoulder pads and inner shoulder areas. i paused the episode in a few places to see what hasbro missed.

i also used apoxy and filled in those big empty square sections in his inner thigh from the molding process and then painted it to match the rest of him. and even added a little battle paint damage

let me know what you think. they were taken by my iphone so ill post better ones if a better camera comes into my possession.

because this site like a few others have issues with file sizes on photos and doesn't have a program that converts it for you as you upload.... i posted my photos on my flickr account. theres 5 pics for now.

thank you! i did this because originally i heard they cancelled plans on releasing skyquake. but now im hearing he's still gona be out.

but i guess well see. i think mine will be better than whatever hasbro will come out with anyway. i hate those powerizer weapons they give the voyager class. so lame.

I ordered guns for dreadwing and skyquake from shapeways.com still waiting on my order. ill paint them and add photos when i can.

but yes i know what you mean. I only have found 2 dreadwings. if i see another one im gona grab it and either do a more accurate dreadwing or custom skyquake depending on if they release him for sure or not and sell him.

i did also make my own dreadwing more accurate. the blue was wrong and so was the gold color.

my biggest pet-peave are the rubber fins and rubber knees. they are impossible to paint and i have yet come across the proper paint for rubber at my local hobby shops.

I think if you painted the rubber parts with primer, it should lend enough "tooth" for the paint to stick. The thing is that there might be a risk of the primer "eating" into the rubber, so you should avoid industrial primers, especially automotive primers.

Modeling primers from Tamiya and Mr. Hobby are probably safer than the ones found in hardware stores. Just to be sure, spray some on a junker TF's rubber parts and see what happens. Or at least spray in very thin coats to that the solvent evaporates more quickly so it doesn't accumulate.

Hope this helps.

I am a customizer of sorts. Mainly repaints. I have been doing models since I was a young teenager I know all the tricks sorta lol.. Any way. Best tip I can give you for those pesky rubber peices is this. Warm soapy water, and a sponge. Just soak it for about 5-10 mins then gently scrub it with the rough side of the sponge. Once you do that dab dry it. Then what ever paint you want to use will go on smoothly with no problems. I did this to Ratchets blades, Fe starscreams crest/knee spikes also his missles fe primes sword etc, etc.. Always use a sealer once its all done tough it will lock in that paint forever. I usually go with Testors clear coat.

On a side note: I also love shapeways friggin fantastic peices they come out with. I will also order a set of Dreadwing/skyquake weapons once I actually land one in my hands.

thanks everyone for the paint tips and image tips.

i tried the image tag once and it wans't working and I gave up. I will try again when I have updates.

I got my tracking number and because i'm in CT and shapeways is in NY, shipping only took a DAY!!!! i'm getting my show accurate/upgrade pieces for many of my TFP figures.

very excited!

Here's a quick tip for those using shapeways. I don't know if it was a random thing or just because of the holidays but i put a bunch of stuff in my cart so i wouldn't forget what I wanted to buy and I let them sit there for a few days. I then got an email giving me a 20% off coupon code and it saved me around 10-20 bucks because I ordered so much. Not saying it will work for you but I'm curious if you leave stuff in your cart they try to push you to buy now by giving you discounts.

Anyways- I've been upgrading all my TFP figures because I'm so picky about detail and Hasbro has made a few eye-sores that I just had to fix *cough* megatron *cough*

My figures have repro-lables mixed with my own paint updates and now will have shapeway weapons. its the ultimate mixture for the best representations of the TFP characters so far. I'll make a separate post when I can to show you guys.
