I always thought that Ultramagnus was supposed to replace Prime. He was in a lot of the manga books,Scamblecity, and I remember him being in a kids book as the leader.I also know that in target 2006 he was portrayed as being the autobot leader of the future.I also remember him having his own video game(I hear it sucks balls)and a commercal where they say he is the new autobot leader.Did they think that using hotrod would be easier for kids to relate to?

UM was not portrayed as the leader of the future in Target 2006.

Takara did present the "Powered Convoy" toy mold to Hasbro as a possible upgrade for Optimus Prime, or as a new leader type.

I do believe Hasbro may have considerable useing UM as the new leader, but I dont believe Marvel/Sunbow ever considered it.

And Marvel/Sunbow was writting the fiction at the time.

Interesting, I never realized that the toy commercial explicitly states Ultra Magnus was "a born leader" (and it has Frank Welker doing a more Megatron voice instead of Galvatron).

Then there is Rodimus Prime's commercial that says he's the new leader even though Optimus is still in the commercial.


Then again, we can all take these commercials with a grain of salt as they weren't exactly telling stories compared to the comics, cartoons, and movie.

Trust me that image is etched onto my soul. It was a few days before my tenth birthday when I saw that issue in my local shop. I started collecting the comic that very day.

Even issue 85's meeting of Magnus and the future Autobots hints at it with Hot Rod kneeling before him and speaking of his possession of the Matrix.

The ads for Galvatron and Magnus on the back of the comics depicted him as the leader of the future. He was Autobot leader between the reigns of Optimus and Rodimus.

That cover was designed to deliberately mislead the readers.Much like the tech spec bios for Galvatron and Rodimus Prime.

The fact that Target 2006 showed Hot Rod kneeling is an indication that the writers already knew the outcome of the film.

Imagine what could have been. If we never got Rodimus Prime or Magnus.
Instead of dying, optimus just got a combined form.
I have to say, I prefer it the way it is, but it's weird to think that this idea may have happened.

Its my understanding A combined Optimus was actually one of their ideas.
