First impressions of TF: The Game from Basketball Jones

Postby Basketball Jones » Tue Jun 26, 2007 1:38 pm

I had the opportunity to play the game for about twenty minutes at a local retailer.

Keep in mind that I consider myself a video gamer first and a Transformers fan second. The following points apply to the Xbox 360 version.

-The game contains an intro with Peter Cullen's voice and the classic "One shall stand, one shall fall" clip.

-Upon selection of the single-player mode, one is presented with the opportunity to side with the Autobots or Decepticons, complete with an icon that transforms from one faction symbol into another. Very Command & Conquer-like.

-After selection of the Decepticons, one is presented with a scene with Blackout. Vehicle controls are fairly typical- not an exceptionally intuitive control scheme, but it works.

-After flying to a large, green marker (one cannot miss these things), Blackout transformed, giving me a chance to serve as the large chopper-bot.

-Faced with the task of destroying an Air Force base, I was given generic missiles, a generic bomb, and a generic melee attack that seems to be in every action game since Halo. I unleashed my arsenal upon the vehicles, destroying them. Graphics aren't bad, although they're a bit generic in appearance.

-At this point, tiny military personnel emerge from the wreckage of the base. Eager for the sound of a good squish, I wander over to the nearest soldier and prepare to introduce him to twenty tons of robot boot.

-..but the squish never comes. Despite the soldiers firing at you, you can't kill them, not even with your heavier weapons. I'm not certain if they can damage you to any significant extent, but it's irritating.

-The missions are timed, and running out of time will equivocate with death.

-Next, we are given Scorponok, who is equipped with generic missiles (this time blue, in opposition to Blackout's red missiles) and generic machine guns. Ammo is infinite, and there doesn't seem to be much of a reason not to use the heavy firepower over the lighter weapons. The lighter weapons seem to be only useful when the heavier weapons are recharging. He can also burrow through the sand, although I wasn't certain how to use it to any significant effect.

-My time ran out after completing one of the five things I needed to devastate in the time limit. I was wandering around and destroying the base.

Overall, the game seems a bit generic and uninspired, but still fun. I'd give it a 7/10 from this brief experience.

Tell us more about the gameplay. Is it the same as the 360 version? Timed missions and no squishing?
