(Articulating) my Devastator- WIP

Postby Tom_Servo » Sun Oct 21, 2007 11:32 am

This is my second go at articulating a Devastator. I was able to find a knock off in near-perfect g1 colors so the time seemed right.
I've wanted to do a really good one ever since I saw the amazing ones on display over at Transtopia by Eggshen, Ptitvite and Devastator. This boy is nowhere near those, but I thought that it was up to a level worth showing.
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l141/misterroundheels/DevastatorFull.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
The neck is built from bits of a KO Gundam (or GODA as the package called him).
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l141/misterroundheels/Devastator012.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
The joints are from a Bionicle. The white crap is epoxy putty from a slightly differient approach that I tried first.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l141/misterroundheels/Devastator010.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

There's still lots of work to go, so I'll keep you updated!

Motto: "Don't do drugs, beer's cheaper anyway!"
cool, now all you have to do is cover up the bionicle bits and paint him, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanks DM! A few tweaks here and there are still yet to come...
In the mean time here are some comparison shots with my last one.

Already a little taller than his older brother!

Luckily, they still get along.

Great idea. Just a suggestion but maybe you should use styrene or fixit sculpt to buid up the Bionicle parts so that they are not so skinny and more robotic. Just a thought.

That's the plan, my man.

Looking cool so far, although I'd have been tempted toward the Knights Kingdom-style ratchets for the joints, myself - they should hold poses far more effectively.

Also, out of curiosity, do you plan to do anything extra to the combiner bits when they're not holding Dev together? I believe one version (I can't remember whose offhand, and I'm too lazy/tired to search) combined the components into an extra vehicle.
Although actually, I believe that may be a scratchbuilt Dev using larger figures...

very nice Tom! the long limbs actually make Devastator more menacing. it's a good thing you plan on making them bulkier by putty, you could add some sculpted details like wires and pipes so that it will look more convincing.

what did you use for the yellow Devastator hands? that open one looks great.

Thanks again for the support guys! I'll try to take these one at a time.

It's from Walgreens, amazingly enough. (That's an American convenience store for you international types.)

The knees are a bit wobbly. I'll have to look into that.

That sounds like an interesting challenge that I'd love to see, but I don't intend to ever display him without being assembled into Devastator.

They're sculpted from scratch with Super Sculpy.

Thanks again for the attention. FYI to anyone thinking about doing this: getting his legs to come out the same length is a real pain! It's worth it when you see him stand up straight though!

The good news is that you're not finished yet. He looks way too lanky/awkward to me. He will probably suck at basketball if he still looks like that as a finished product.

Dare I say this is "constructive" criticism? Yep ... I did it, sorry.

Anyway, I can't wait to see how this turns out for ya. It has potential ... you got the joints all there. It'll be interesting to see how you build it up from there.

I may just be eating my words in a few weeks.

this is the second time i've seen Bionicle parts used extensively for TF kitbashing; though i might be wrong and there are other bashes here that use these parts also. very good! it's amazing what a little bit of imagination can do.

can't wait for you to "bulk" the Bionicle parts up.

Hey that's nice!!!
Bionicle joints are the greatest as long as you don't add too much bulk to him.
Anyways, he looks good already!
BTW, nice visor!

how's this coming along servo? looking good so far. I think with the movie line being so limited mold-wise, I'm finding myself looking back in time too. These originals do look great with a little help here and there. looking forward to seeing more.

I continue to inspire! Ptitvite and Eggshen too! You're doing a great job Tom Servo. He looks okay right now, but after you're done bulking up the parts I'm sure he'll look great!

I made Devastator a new shoulder so he can now dish out the bitch slaps like the best of them.

Come to think of it, I really hate the term "pimping" to denote improving something. I don't know why I went with that title for this thread.

Well, when you're also employing such phrases as 'bitch slaps', I don't think it's too out of place... :P

Adding the shoulder joints adds more kibble but man, that's some nice poseability.

Thanks much for the compliments.
Sorry I haven't been around for a while, but last week was really hectic for me. I finally got a little time and I have something to show you... BULK!
This is just a roughing out, but I think it's how I'm going to go.
