Audio problem with original NES

Hey guys,

My Dad gave me an original Nintendo Entertainment System for Christmas this year that he got from one of his co-workers for free. I've been wanting an original for a long time but was never willing to spend money on one, especially after the classic games that I loved as a kid started coming out on the Wii's Virtual Console.

After I hooked up my "new" old school NES to my TV (around 19 years after receiving my first one as a kid at Christmas), there seems to be a problem with the audio. When you first turn the TV on, all you can hear is a "humming" noise coming from the speakers. When I turn up the volume, I can hear the video game's music but the humming noise is still there. I am using the audio/video wires instead of an RF adapter. I thought about buying one but would prefer not since I have the original A/V wires and tons of extras. I tried some different wires but the result is still the same.

I looked around on Google but wasn't sure what to look for. "Nintendo humming", "nintendo audio problem" and "nintendo audio humming" didn't really turn up results that looked helpful. So I thought I'd turn to my fellow Seibertronians to see if you guys can give me some useful advice, point me in the right direction, and/or give me some other suggestions of what to search for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I still kick ass at Tetris after all of this years. 50,000+ points on my first try. :D

My wife and I have 4 original Nintendos(not to mention about 300 games).....and have had this same problem ourselves. But only on newer tv's for some reason.
Keep rechecking your contact(in both the console and tv....give each end a little wiggle)but more than likely you are going to have to buy a rf adapter.
Good luck. :D
I still can't believe Transformers was never made into a NES game. :?

It was ... in Japan for the Famicom. But it's an absolutely horrid game. I liked the one for the Commodore better.

Does the RF Adapter resolve this problem? If so, I'll go buy an RF Adapter.

I was just looking the game up on ebay.....pretty bad huh?
As for the rf adapter.....everytime I use one they work perfect on both new and old tv's.

This is purely a guess, but your A/V port may be busted. Before buying an RF switch, you might be able to swap an RF switch with an SNES or another older console as a lot of them use the same wires. Or, you could call up a friend and ask to borrow an RF switch :P

You could also try http://www.nintendorepairshop.com. I've heard they have a good reputation.

Same thing here.

Last time I checked (like 2 years ago), all my NES carts still work, but the save batteries have expired on games like Zelda and Dragon Warrior.

Well, when it rains it pours. I just got my hand on another original NES for free that is very yellowed. This one came with an RF adapter. I'll give it a try here soon to see if the RF adapter works with my NES.

The NES. I miss my NES, it was awesome! Spent so many hours playing metroid *sigh*

Do you guys remember how you had to reset the machine constantly when starting a game, as it didn't always load first time?
Ah, memories...

I hope it works out for ya Ryan!
