Headed for a Cliff (work in progress)

Postby SkyQuake101 » Fri Mar 02, 2007 1:05 am

Firstly, I will say, don't get your hopes up. The head is already a little misshapen.... Also, there are a couple of air bubble hole problems on the nose, and Cliffjumper's right helmet tip. The expanding mold I made deteriorated quickly. So, I doubt I would get a better second shot out of it. I'm considering filling the air bubble holes in with super glue.... This is my first attempt at casting my own parts ever.

Doesn't look all that bad. air bubbles are common.

I find it helps to take a needle or pin preffrably and use the flat end like a plunger and stamp the plastic mix or resin into the mold as your pouring it. It helps push the air out from between the mold and the resin.

I don't know if i'd use super glue though. If it needs to be clear for say light piping, a hobby shop possibly even Walmart should have a plastic cement designed for models. it dries perfectly clear. it's in a blck squeeze bottle and the package i know of has an jetfighter having the glass glued on as an example. Sorry i can't remember the name.

Someone posted an image on Livedoor of a Classics Cliffjumper with a modded head. Whoever it was dodn't do anything to the horns, all he did was fill out the sides of the helmet to shape them more like G1 Cliffjumper's.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up using model glue fill in a little (still quite imperfect).

I figure I owe everyone a photo with the first coat of paint on it. It's a little fuzzy, but I still have to apply several more coats, and straighten up some lines. I screwed up the sides of the head a little by trying to make Cliffjumper's helmet ridges extend to the back of the head. The thinnest dremel pad was just too wide. I think when I finish this, I'll try to do another expansion mold again. While this head is somewhat okay in a school art project sort of way, I am dissatisfied (too many imperfections). When I'm done with this, I'll post the final pics. Until then, have at thee....

Okay, well I guess this is mostly finished. For my first time casting, I guess its not too bad. There were several defects that I couldn't work out with out damaging it more. Like I said, I may try this again. Comments are welcome!

Thanks for looking, and if anyone else wants to try this, be my guest. I used Pretender Bumblebee's head, and made an expansion mold from it. *Ooops, I just noticed I put "with in" instead of just "with my" in the text. Oh wells....

Not bad for a first time casting, but I think that modding the original Classics head, like the guy over at Livedoor did (as referenced in the link above) would probably yield better results in this case.

Probably, but I wanted to be different, and it was an experiment.... The head design is distinctly different. However, the expansion mold did funny things. I will probably try again.
