Should I get MP Megatron?

Postby Bonecrusher27 » Mon Oct 01, 2007 2:54 am

Hi all,

Just wanted some advice. I have been offered the opportunity to purchase an MP Megatron. i'm hesitating because I read some reviewers say he's fragile and easy to break while transforming. Also, I don't have MP Prime, so it kinda doesn't have anything to match MP Megs to.

Just a note: I'm getting the original one without that stupid orange plub.

Any advice?

Weapon: Double-Barreled, Armor-Piercing Particle Beam Cann...
Yeah, the metal parts have been known to tarnish (not rust like previously thought) so you should keep some vinegar or WD-40 on hand. I also read on the TFW2005 forums that the ring where the shoulder hook onto the elbow parts can snap from the stress of the ratchet joint, so you might consider removing the springs.

Not to say it's a bad figure, but since Takara went with the gun form, they had to make some compromises they weren't an issue with Prime.

Weapon: Diffraction Sword
He's a great figure if you like Megatron. He is kinda fragile, definitely a display piece, but very much the perfect visage of G1 Megatron in full glorious thunder. Of course, you gotta weigh that against the hefty chunk of change he costs. As for some of his known defects, I havent had any trouble with any joints or such with mine. But like I mentioned, I treat him pretty much solely as a display piece. I've transformed him twice since I bought him. Both times very carefully, and both took forever. And I mean over an hour. He's a complicated bastard. I had to refer to the instructions, only to find that they arent in English! As for the tarnishing of his metal parts, the only metal he has is his feet, and yes, those do tend to get a bit tarnished. This is easily fixed with regular treatments of WD40 or somesuch. All in all though, I would say if you're looking for a great G1 Megatron display piece, this is it. He was worth the $120 I paid for him at BotCon, and I would probably be willing to pay up to $150 for him. Plus I already have MP Prime, and they do look great together.

Depends on what type of collector you are. Here is my advice:

Negatives - MP-05 Megatron is definitely a masterpiece from a toy engineering standpoint & complexity. But its draw back is partly also from its complexity. You'll need the instructions to transform for quite a while. When you transform it, you will scratch some paint. No way to avoid it (especially at the side of the knee joints when you retract the legs). Also, there are a few tiny hooking tabs that could very easily stressed & break. I already got one stressed regardless being real careful and aware of its fragile nature. And some parts are locked so tight that you think you are going to break either the toy or your nails when you try pulling/unlocking things apart for the first couple times (you do get better with more practice & when the plastic breaks in). Ankle ball joints also tend to be too loose to support the figure with the heavy fusion cannon, making Megatron leaning to his right, and in some case collapse due to the weight(this could be easily fix by superglue, thickening the ball joint and give more friction, which makes the joints much tighter).

Positives - This is bar none the best transforming Megatron toy we'll get in a very very long time. Looks awesome, even though the legs on the skinny side. Joints are very tight (minus the ankles) and mostly ratchet in one way or the other. Without the fusion cannon, he stands and pose very well & sturdy. With the fixed ankles, he can hold the fusion cannon just fine without collapsing, though the extra weight is still there and cause some leaning. Just need to pose the knees in ways to compensate it. Some people bothered by all the jointed panels on him (shoulders, arms, waist, legs...etc.), but I am totally fine with them. They don't really pop out as much as people claim, and helps prevent breakage when they do. The poseable panels add to the aesthetics actually I think. And they stay in place pretty good. No real problem there. Got the light gimmick and solid gun mode. Paint finish is very very good, making some plastic parts look and feels like metal, especially on the chest.

With all those said, see if any of those sway you from one way to another. Meg is a great display piece for sure that can handle pose changing often with decent play value. But its not something you will want to keep transforming over and over. Some paint will scratch and parts will break eventually, even if those are just a small tab or two. I am very happy with mine. Just need to know what to expect before you are buying, and don't expect it to feel and play the same as MP Prime, even if they share the same 'Masterpiece' label. Prime wins on diecast, sturdiness and playability. Megatron wins on complexity with transformation that almost seem impossible, while still stay pretty accurate on the sculpt. And they are great complimenting each other side by side. ;)

If you do decide to buy MP Megatron, do it soon. A lot of stores are pre-sold out already. Digital Toys, Big bad toy store are pre-sold out. MP Megs is already getting hard to find.

I recommend MP Megatron BTW, excellent figure!

Considering that collectors and fans have been screaming out for a proper G1 Megatron for 20+ years I think it would be a shame to miss out. I doubt there will ever be any other version of Megs that comes close to the Masterpiece figure.

I've had mine for 6 months and since everyone says they'll
break or damage him on the first transform.. I haven't
dunnit yet!

Must resist... and maybe get another one to play with... when
I get richer!
Mine was keeling over when I kept him flatfooted! Then I
lifted up the flaps on his feet to make him sturdier.. it
scratches the silver paint on legs a bit but I put lil piece
of tape under there where metal touches the plastic!

I also took his head apart and painted him some black
anime-accurate eyebrows =)

Thanks everyone for your detailed responses! Guess that shows the passion with which people regard Megatron and what an impact he's made.

Unfortunately, I'm just not a display shelf person. I like transforming my toys back and forth. Otherwise I keep MISB, but just doesn't make sense to do so with MP Megatron because it's not a see through box, it might as well be an empty box.

However, after reading all the encouragement here, I can't not get him. So I've reached the perfect compromise. I've ordered him, and give it to my brother as a Christmas gift  He has MP Prime, but not MP Megatron.

It's only good for a display piece like many have said. Broke two pegs in the process transforming him several times. Without those two pegs he doesn't hold up at all in P-38 pistol mode. Super glued one peg above the trigger halve while I couldn't glue the smaller tab on the thigh plate. Either can snap easily. The super glued one came off immediately once I transformed it to p-38 again. It didn't hold up even when I was trying to get the peg in the slot. Had to re glue it back. Not bothering with it again. Won't transform him again but I can't even return him for a refund or find spare parts for replacement on ebay yet. Regreted buying him. Paid $109 for him ,and $12.95 for shipping in early April of this year.

And you didn't cancel it in time? You might want to return both and repurchase both with the coupon. It may still save you some money.

Then go buy MP-05!
