Hello I am a more recent G1 collector. I buy most of my vintage g1's on ebay but sometimes ill get a g1 in that looks good in the photo but when I actually get it in hand its very dirty and has a weird smell to it.

I recently bought a loose G1 superion with all accessories and boxes with paperwork. The Figures themselves are good with minor playwear when I bought it has this weird funky smell out of the package that smelled like cooked dinner...

I wasn't too happy with that so I cleaned the figures using simple green. Most of the scent is gone now but it still smells a little funky... Does anyone know a good method to clean g1 figures and get rid of any funky smells they might have?

i used a similar method to this http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/1252/ ... -plastics/ to remove yellowing. I know you are concerned about the smell but this process actually just removes the top layer that being, i believe i read somewhere, the fire retardant stuff they spray on top. Anyway I've used this method without the oxi clean. I actually did use the stronger hydrogen peroxide and it didn't destroy the plastic it just made it bright.

i think since this process removes the top layer of plastic/fire retardant spray/whatever it might remove the smell as well.

just a thought. if nothing else now you can get a nice g1 figure for a lower price because its yellow and you can fix it!

TY while this method is useful unfortunately. Many G1's contain diecast as well as plastics parts. Is there a safer way anyone knows of to fix the bad smell issue on old g1 figures without having to take the whole figure apart for cleaning?

Try wrapping each figure in a dryer sheet and let it sit for 24 hours. Not promising anything but dryer sheets have proven miraculous with removing weird smells from things in the past.
