Botcon diorama WIP

Postby crazysteve » Fri Sep 15, 2006 7:44 pm

I am doing a couple of dioramas for Botcon and I wanted to show a picture of one of them in the early stages. Here's a slightly blurry shot of the rough setup:

Image

I made a resin statue of Megatron about three years ago and I figured I'd break it out and put it in a diorama, but the scene just wasn't clicking in my mind. I didn't know what to do with him until I found one of those little black costume Spider- Mans that's part of some sort of table top game. Then it hit me-the Spider Man was just small enough to recreate the cover to Marvel issue 3. (Unfortunately he cost like 9 bucks at TRU while Wal Mart had him for $6.74. I try to stay loyal to TRU and even though it cost me about 3 dollars I still bought him there.)

The webs are made of twisties. They hold Spider Man up surprisingly well. For the background I'm going to use real Transformers posed approximately as they were on the cover of issue 3.

The last time TFMatser saw my Megatron he suggested I hollow out the barrel on Megatron's back. I did that and I repositioned all the limbs in addition to the head so they'd work in the context of this scene.

Megatron looks great! Really got his look down. I like the way his body is positioned--the off-sided style (mainly around his midsection) is very realistic. That's some really nice work. :)

Oh, and great use of twisty ties!

I've always loved that Megs. Truth be told, it was that project that truly got me into kitbashing. And meeting you at '03 was such a treat (even if I was a scared kid who didn't introduce himself) :D

It looks great, though you might want to wrap megs a bit more tightly and place spidey a bit lower to make it more comic-accurate.

You can find a scan of issue #3's cover at TF Archive's Marvel cover gallery.

Hey that's pretty cool of you to say. I'm sure one day somebody else will say the same to you.

Yeah, I was pretty scary back then but my hair has grown out, I got the horns filed down, the tail got cut off in a bike accident and the scars have all healed well. I shouldn't be too horrifying this year! :P

Well, it was more shell shock then anything else. I'd never been to any convention of any kind before. So to walk in the dealers room and see thousands od transformers... I literally lost my balance and my best friend had to catch me. Literally. And then seeing all the awesome (and no so awesome) customs and the astounding work, like your Megs, Steelskin and TFM's Motomaster. Yeah, I could have been stoned that weekend and been more coherant.

So, it wasn't you. It was me.

I was overwhelmed at my first convention too, no so much though. I must recommend that every Transformer fan try to go to at least one. I've been to seven five Botcons and two OTFCCs and some of the magic does wear off, but I don't think it every really disappears.

Also, amazing work Crazy Steve! I remember reading about this Megatron on your website and how you had it on display at a comic book store. I don't trust having any of my customs out of my sight so I give you kudos for that!
