What exactly does the Energon key do? I know nothing about the Energon line. The key comes already affixed in motorbike mode. After transforming to robot mode I can't remove it. How does it come off; does it just pull off?

i know in some of the molds, the key "unlocks" alternate modes. i can't help you with arcee, i only have primus.

Do you mean the little crystal? In the energon cartoon they had to get the energon chip attached to them to powerup and officially use their energon weapons (the bow).

And yes, just pull it off. It's tight at first but then it loosens up. . .

The Keys were only in the Cybertron Line, Energon Arcee did not have one.

Well I don't know what it is. It's in my target exclusive Arcee (little blue bike). The instructions say "Attach Energon Chip!" Why should I do that I don't know. Does it lock or unlock anything?

Explanation Time:

Energon figures had Energon "Chips" not keys. those little translucent plastic stars that can be affixed to a certain spot on the figures. In the case of Arcee, onto her chest. However unlike Cybertron Keys that unlock hidden gimmicks in Cybertron figures, energon Chips do absolutely nothing to the figure, other than give it a nice plastic star to wear.

In the cartoon, they powered up the TF's and allowed them to use the Energon Weaponry. In the toys, they are just there for display.

Add on: blue Target Movie Arcee is a repaint of Energon Arcee so that's why she has energon accessories and star chip.

yup.

In the Energon line, all of the basic figures Omnicons and Terrorcons could absorb Energon and make these Energon chips or stars as they were called. The larger bots came with the port to attach the star but the basic figures came with the actual stars and the clear parts to make the different weapons. The idea was the weapons were "made" from the Energon stars. In essence it was the gimmick to tie in the Omnicons with the other gimmicks of this line (Power Linking for Autobots, Power mode for Dcons).
The Target basic TF movie exclusives just repainted the Omnicons, the Terrorcons had a beast mode alt form and have never been repainted outside of Energon.
