Im looking into getting a new pc, and my biggest dilema right now is go for XP or Vista? So I wana know which games do and dont work on Vista. The only games I play regularly are Neverwinter Nights and CnC Generals Zero Hour.

Vista made me want to return to the days of chalk and slate, if that's any help. I don't know if it's compatible with those specific games, though. Maybe it's compatible with a hammer?

It's one of those things that divides people. Don't make any decisions until you've had more responses. If more people say get Vista, then get Vista. I never tried gaming on it as I couldn't get as far as to run more rudimentary programs on it.

Not sure that the original Neverwinter Nights will even run on Vista as it might not have enough 'anti-piracy' coding to it. That's why half the games won't run on Vista anymore. Supposedly they aren't well enough protected. I had a list of incompatible games somewhere and now I can't find it.

Personally I'd say wait, or better yet. if you have a large enough hard drive, and a retail Full (not upgrade) copy of xp pro then repartition the hard drive in half, and upgrade only one half with vista... you should then get a screen everytime you start your computer asking if you want to run Win xp or Vista.
if you do opt for this method make sure to BACKUP you r files. to repartition you need to WIPE the hard drive CLEAN. then reinstall windows fresh, when it gets to the section asking what partition to install it on there should be an option to create another partition. and make the other partition about half of the full drive capacity.
then if you find a game that wont run on vista just restart, select XP, and install and run from there.
as for if NWN will run on vista, I'm gunna guess no. mainly since it's soo old. can't be sure about CnC though.

If you're running a computer that's over a year old, then yes.
However seeing as you're getting a new pc (try to go for 2gb ram as well) you shouldn't have any problems running Vista.
As far as compatability, I tried to install the original Dawn of War, Vista cracked a wobbly at it and wouldn't even attempt to install.
However, the Dark Crusade add-on (which can actually be installed independantly) worked fine for me.
Age of Empires III is also compatabile, but I wouldn't recommend it anyway.
Anyhoo ... some links.
Microsoft's list of games that work
Independant list - According to it both CnC and NWN are compatible.
But if you're going Vista, get the 2gb ram, and before you do anything after booting it up, turn off "User Control Access" because that WILL give you more grief than you can ever imagine from a computer.

Me and my dad were looking at a computer running Vista at Wal*mart, and saw a counter on the desktop that says how much CPU it was using. It said 17%.
"That's not bad," I said. "It's not bad, is it?"
"This computer's not doing anything except run the OS, and it's at 17%," he said, not taking his eyes off the HD screen (Something alien to us). "When my computer at home is running only XP, it's at 2%."
So you can't run as much stuff at once with Vista.
Don't get me wrong, I do want Vista, I'm just going to wait for the compatibility list to expand, and a Service Pack or two to come out.

Current CPU usage - 2%-24% while running one window of IE, one window of FF, MSN, uTorrent, AVG and probably a whole bunch of other stuff in the background.
Considering it was WalMart, i'm betting it was some cheap crappy computer anyway.

It was definatly a crappy computer if it was a display at wal mart (I should know I work at one) all of those coumuters have the bare minimum required to run vista (graphics, CPU, nad RAM wise.) usually around this:
* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 512 MB of system memory
* 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
* Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
my current CPU usage (note I have a P4 3.0GHz) is fluctuating from 0% (i.e. too small for a whole number) and 5%. I've only got Firefox, and the Task manager open. I'm running ~47 processes.
when i had the Vista Beta I was usually running at 5-8% cpu.

Control Panel - Security Centre.
Warning though, I did it about two weeks after I got the computer. Once I turned it off it rolled some programs (like my e-mail and news agent) back to the point of install so I actually lost data.

odd vista has been giving me 0 problems with my computer games. the only ones i could install were the games who's discs were scratched up beyond usage (not mmy fault, cd cases fell out of the box i was moving them in and the cds came out of their cases on hitting the ground) and lost cd keys (only 1 game). Otherwise i have been able to install and operate all the computer games i have to work on my pc.
