'Commercials'

Postby Uniprimus » Thu Sep 13, 2007 10:04 pm

I am sorry, many people are probably gonna disagree with me, but after seeing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV71a2I5dsA dumbshit video I just got pissed.

I am sick of people saying Transformers media are jut toy commercials.

They are most definantly not.

Let's look at the definition of a commercial:

'Radio and Television. a paid advertisement or promotional announcement.'

I do not see how ANY of the toons or any media matches this. If they can, someone explain it to me.

Now them there is the 07 movie issue. People need to get over it. There were a few, FEW TFs that beared the GM logo. Not all of them. There wasn't a message saying 'Go buy GM' all the way through the movie. Then the airforce adversisement. This I just PLAIN don't understand. If there is the airforce in a movie, it does not mean it is an advertisement.

Sorry if I seemed pissed off, but that vid just really got me angry. You won't like me when I am angry. :BOOM:

In what way do the cartoons not promote the toys? Sorry, but all the shows were created to sell toys. It just happens that, for some reason, they were better than all the other toy commercials/shows they were up against.

So all cartoons are toy commercials?

I never knew that.

Given I didn't say that, I'm not really sure where this discussion can go.

Not necessarily, but merchandising can influence a show's plot in some cases.

I'll use a recent Gundam SEED tidbit I heard about:

One of the character's mobile suit/mecha model kit wasn't selling very well, and he could be considered a bad guy(Dearka and the Buster Gundam to be exact). So to help kit sales, they shifted him more toward a good guy role. Likewise, a popular selling kit(the Aile Strike Gundam) was given a quick repaint and put in the show at the tail end to help that series of models sell over one million units or something like that. Transformers has similar instances, why else would Prime change colors for no reason in the last episode of Armada?

So yeah, Transformers definitely started out as a toy commercial, but it did evolve into a source of fiction that a lot of fans enjoy. It took it about ten to fifteen years to get to that point though. One example of how commercialisation impacted Transforwas was back in '91. The original U.S. Marvel G1 comic was cancelled more or less because the original Transformers toy line was going to be ended soon, and the comic wasn't selling enough to continue on with Hasbro support, or something to that extent.
