TFA.
I'm currently working my way through Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone, RiD, Armada, Superlink, and Galaxy Force so my opinion may change after I watch them all. I wish I could find Car Robots and Micron Legend as I would prefer to see the originals in all their glory.

Beast Wars, by miles. I did like RiD and Armada, but Beast Wars just fit good with G1 and the animation was cool and the story was freaking good. Best story to this date.

I'm not sure if they've ever been put on DVD. I'm watching fansubs of these series.

You can find the RTM1 dubs on eBay. I wouldn't though, they're really bad.

Yep, definitely! I was skeptical when watching episodes 1 and 2 (because I thought the toys looked bad), but after a few episodes I thought it was cool. After "The Agenda" episodes (when they find the Ark), I was AMPED for this series. Very, very well done, I thought. Megatron made the series, IMO.
I'm torn on my favorite now; Beast Wars or G1...

Beast Machines smart, character driven, great action, sci-fi drama. It took the very best elements of Beast Wars and took it too the next level, that's why for my Beast Machines is the best Transformers series of all time with Beast Wars a very close second.

Yeah, I agree with that. If he wasn't such a snobby yet menacing character, it wouldn't be as fun. And his voice was perfect. Honestly, better than Frank Welker's G1.

Beast Wars. Great story and cast. Though I was disappointed to see Terrorsaur die early on and I never liked Rattrap ot Quickstrike.
Animated loses out because of daft human characters like Professor Princess. Yet Sari is actually the most endearing human sidekick the Autobots have had.
RID grew on me. Scourge and Skybite were just great.
Beast Machines had great story and animation but the characters lacked the charm of the Beast Wars cast. BM Megatron just wasn't the same as the awesome BW Megatron.
The G1 cartoon is actually one of the worst TF cartoons. MTMTE and the Movie were great but most of season 2 and a lot of s3 were awful.

Does the Japanese stuff after the US stuff count as G1? I don't mind Victory. Beast Wars is a close 2nd after US G1.

I believe the Japanese cartoons from "Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers" to "Operation Combination" are held within the G1 family, though continuity is different. I know the comics have done a lot of continuity stitching but to me, I basically look at the Japanese and the American lines of cartoons as two separate branches in G1 to keep things orderly.

Beast wars is my favorite series of transformers. The characters were great, as I loved Silverbolt and Dinobot. Beast wars Megatron was by far most successful Megatron to date. He had the right amount of brains, brawn and menace. He was a bad guy I almost wanted to see win...almost hehe.
Beast machines had some cool ideas, but it didn't fully pan out as well as it could have. I enjoyed some of the directions it went in, but it just lacked the same energy of beast wars, and crapped on a couple characters in ways that were a bit jarring. The character models looked horrible compared to beast wars for the heroes, I prefer all the BW versions.
Animated comes in second, it has some solid character development. I mean we all know Prime one of the greatest heroes, but it's interesting to see the transformation of him go from rookie to a effective vet leader. It has so many awesome reference to other series. Getting past the art style, and skimming the first season it really picks up and proved itself to me. I don't think it will come back, but I'm glad it went out on a high note with end game.
I haven't really gotten into the Unicron Trilogy or RiD. They seem ok, I wanted go back and watch more of them so I could have a better opinion of them, but I havent yet. RiD from what I saw was too anime for it's own good, as Fortress Maxiumus is powered by child?....yeah..Not a fan of stuff powered by love or friendship. That was a bit of a turn off to it.
G1 I enjoy still to this day to some degree, but I can see how far the series has come from it. I don't hold the fact it was intially just a 30 min commerical in eyes of the suits against it. While I hated the 86 film, and the horrible use of the IP, the fan backlash showed the suits the fans do care about transformers, and they woke up with how they handled it. They realized had they pushed any harder on the matter they might alienated their fans. They realized it was something that had staying power, and treated it much better. I don't know if they d ever come to that conclusion if Prime hadn't been killed, but as horrible as that day was for many fans and parents,(oh primus I feel bad for them having all crying kids around.) I think it set a tone for thnigs to come.
I await to see what comes next after animated. While i'd preferred a better art style, animated did something really important ..it made sure transformers got back to people who it belongs to most. The next generation of kids. While us older fans might dug it, alot of it was for them, and they had their new mythos, a new optimus prime, a new megatron to despise with splashes of the old. I'm glad have something to share with my sisters kiddos.
While be nice see something with some slightly more mature tones in direction of beast wars, I don't want to see the kids get left out in the cold entirely. But I definitely wanna see a new series come in wake of animated if it's over. Transformers is more popular than it's ever been, they'd be foolish to leave it be heh.

Re: What is your fav non- G1 cartoon?
1. Beast Wars- This was just awesome. At first I thought that it was just too silly, but then (7-8 years later) I actually watched it and the story was incredible. My initial reaction was very "truk-not-munky".
2. Beast Machines- I know a lot of people hated this because of what it did to the Beast Wars characters and because of the overly serious/spiritual tone of the whole thing, but I loved it. I actually really got into it when it was on TV without having seen BW.
3. RID- You know, I initially was going to talk about how much I hated RID, with the silliness (it stayed silly the way I had feared BW would but didn't) and the really stupid characters (sideburn- please, stop trying to get with inanimate objects) but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I really did enjoy it. Skybyte- you want to hate him because it's so silly, but you can't. Scrourge- best nemesis Prime ever. Toys- prime and magnus rocked. Yes, megatron had a "hand" mode and the Fort Max thing was a slow and painful letdown (well, less so in retrospect), but the show was a lot of fun.
4. Armada- At this point, we're getting down to "Its best because it had the least wrong with it" territory. Good story telling but the "gotta get them all", kid oriented thing was annoying.
5. Energon- oh, the squandered possibilities. There's actually a tiny part of me that hopes that one day, they'll go back and re-dub this series. It could have been REALLY good.
I haven't finished cybertron yet, so I didn't rank it, but It's looking pretty good so far. Animation and dub are pretty good. The only thing is the whole "nothing really happens in this episode, but we're building up to something- I promise" feeling that plagued Energon.
EDIT- What the heck was I thinking? Animated belongs in there right behind Beast Wars!! Another one of those shows you initially think you hate, then can't stop watching.
