By the time the Snakemen line came out the line was already unofficially cancelled by retailers not ordering anymore stock after they couldn't get rid of peg after peg of nothing but "Disco Skeletor".
If they had held out a little longer for the Snakemen line the line probably would have continued at retail, as would have the cartoon. But Mattel's mismanagement doomed the line and it was too expensive to continue solely at comic shops. What's truly frightening is that you could get Disco Skeletor for a couple dollars on clearance at Walmart back then and now he appears to be the highest priced Skeletor of the line selling for around $35 on eBay MOC.

LSD Skeletor was hard to get over here, probably because it was shelf warming at walmart

The line was mismanaged from the start, com-chip equivalents to non com-chips meant having to do a 2nd version of Grayskull as well as removing the chips resulting in a lot of duplicate figures early on. On top of the early release NTSC promo video with figure (meaning they could only be sold stateside -at least transformers prime had promo region free dvds). Snake men had a bit more mature content so it might not have got the retail push it needed and then it moved to the statues (which I know licensing reasons and all but it really did seem to move to be 100% targeted to mature collectors).
To say anything fails because it shelfwarms isn't true of most things, Iron giant toys were in bargain bucket buys in toysrus yet we didn't even see them here in the UK. Avatar, one of the highest grossing films and even that didn't even get toys over here at retail. Marketing and distribution blunders everywhere (so Hasbro UK might be useless but they ain't alone). Plus one of the biggest crimes of all toydom, no short circuit figures from a film that would have sold them by the millions (even police academy got toys and a toon and that's even before figuring in Troma toons, we live in a weird world).
Hasbro even do a Darthvader that looks like LSD Skeletor, so it wont be long before we get the Optimus and Megatron equivalent
