Age of Extinction Discussion Thread

Wow it's been a while since I've been on here, so here's my two cents: LOVED the movie, probably my favorite of the series so far. I have a few little gripes of course, but who doesn't? SPOILERS of course
The Bots:
Holy crap, what happened to Optimus? AOE's Optimus Prime is EXTREMELY pissy and dark. He threatens to kill humans several times throughout the movie and doesn't seem to regret it whatsoever. The emotion is actually very real, which surprises me. AOE is the first Bayverse movie where any serious emotion has come from Optimus to the point where I actually feel for him.
Lockdown was cool, but not really developed well. I feel like if anybody going into this movie with no knowledge of TF or who Lockdown really is will be kind of confused by him. Galvatron kind of sucked, the only reason being that he had like 3 lines and maybe a minute total of screen time. We should be seeing more of in the next two movies though, so I'm not mad about it. No Starscream at all! Not even a cameo! There were a few two-headed Shockwave clones but no Starscream? I call BS.
I really loved Hound and Crosshairs. "My fat ass is stuck!" I also loved how they diminished Bee's role a bit so he's not the centerpiece of the damn movie this time around. Drift however was just plain dumb-looking. He was a triple changer with no explanation whatsoever, which once again, would confuse the hell out of anybody watching with no knowledge of TF.
The Humans
It may have taken 3 movies, but Bay finally got the humans right. There wasn't any useless drama bull crap, none of the characters felt really fake and acted, and most importantly, they didn't have more screen time than the Bots.
I was actually shocked by the humans a few times. The human villains were actually a lot more menacing than the Decepticons, and I recall actually yelling "Die bitch!" when Marky Mark threw that one asshat out the window. The human villains were fantastic and really done right this time around. Think what's-his-name from DOTM but better.
I was also shocked when they killed Lucas. To my knowledge this is the first time they've ever killed a human protagonist in the movies. I'm kind upset that they did it because he was such a cool character, but his death really set a tone for the rest of the movie.
The one place the human characters fall short is Stanley Tucci's character. He started off as all dark and calculating and ****, but once Lucas died, they decided to give him a 180 personality and turn him into the comic relief. His "get the **** out of the way" line was hysterical (I laughed for a good minute), but his comedic side was really unnecessary because Hound was around as well.
Plot
I have nothing to say other than it was a good plot. Not DOTM level good in terms of complexity, but good.
Gripes
WAYYYYYY too long. It was like 2hrs 40 minutes and I was just sitting there towards the end thinking "When will this be over??" The end battle was dragged out a bit too long. Not Man of Steel level dragged out, but pretty close.
The Dinobots. They were only in the movie for like 20 minutes right at the end. To be completely honest, I feel like Bay shouldn't have even introduced them and used the extra time to develop Lockdown a bit more. The explanation as to why they transformed into dinosaurs was very shady and not explained well. I of course understood it, but once again, if a viewer had no knowledge of TF, they would have been very confused.
Lockdown was underdeveloped. We're told he's a bounty hunter working for the CIA under a contract stating he gets to take Optimus Prime alive and give humans a Seed in return. We never really get an explanation of his character though. I feel like he would have been a much better villain if we had gotten an explanation about him from Optimus like he explained who Megatron was in TF1.
Galvatron. Built by humans from Megatron's remains? Uh... no. I don't like that at all. If he was supposed to be based on Optimus Prime, then they should've just made it Nemisis Prime. The tractor trailer fits Nemisis perfectly, and they could have shortened the movie a little bit by not trying to introduce Galvatron. His transformation animation was absolutely epic with the cube cloud **** going on, but I really don't like the fact that humans did it. They could have alluded to Unicron's existence much more heavily if they had done something else.
Conclusion
It was an awesome movie, worth the money, wait, and time to watch. Awesome setup for a new trilogy, I hope Bay stays with it for the next 2.

This movie was the best one yet. Yes, It's a Bay flick, so there were things I hated about it. But overall it was a big improvement. Why all of the sudden these new Autobots just appear no one knows. Why the humans would go ahead building Galvatron when obviously Megatron was taking over makes no sense. Why Bumblebee is even more immature, anyone's guess. What happened to Sam and his fam? What happened to Ratchet's spark? What happened to Lockdown's ship at the end? Where is Barricade? What happened to then hatchlings? What were those swords about a the end when Prime grabbed one and turned into a knight? Why does Prime suddenly have jet thrusters? Why was Prime about to scan a truck, turn into a different, brand new truck and be fully repaired all of the sudden? Why don't any of the Autobots even care about human life? What happened to Prime's motto, "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings?" He obviously no longer cares about the humans safety. Why did Prime leave the Bots on earth at the end? Why does Galvatron have no spark? Who were Lockdown's compatriots. Anyhow. theose were my initial questions.
Unicron was born down the street from me. No joke.

I think a number of these questions have bbeen answered in other posts in this thread. Especially the ones regarding Prime and Lockdown's ship.

This movie in opinion was honestly better than the first three Mark was made yo be in this movie I would give it a 4.67 stars apparently there might be a reference to COBRA VIA TATTOO. It would kind of make since since cobra had taken over the Capitol building placing this sometime before retaliation and after DOTM or a possible crossover

[/quote] I feel your pain, bro. Like I said beofre, it is strange that he dosen't do anything personaly to stop Autobots, witch is odd. Beign one of the most powerfull Decepticon Warriors, tha already proved that is a challenge for entire Autobot Team at once, whe should try to stop them by ripping dinobots appart. Especially now, when his power make him virtually invincible.
well to be honest if i were living as a head for several years and just got my body back i wouldnt be in too much of a hurry to lose it again. im glad he survived though. hopefully next movie we can actually see him in action and prove that he is actually competent lol

He started the entire uprising and gave a speech.
As I recall, that "uprising" was crushed within minutes.
Megatron's always been a joke in Bay's films and, frankly, I'm sick of it.
First he was a terrible pilot who crashed in the arctic where he was stuck for literally thousands of years, including most of the first movie until the last 25 minutes or so.
Then, he willingly debased himself before The Fallen.
Then, he was a total wuss who pretty much handed his command over to Sentinel and put up no fight whatsoever when Optimus attacked him.
Now, he's a whiny bitch who, apart from the part you mentioned, does little more than complain about how the Autobots are ruining everything, never actually confronting said Autobots to DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, then just sort of walking away, figuring "eh, I'll get you later".
It's high time Bay realized that ending a film like this DOES NOT guarantee a sequel, so Galvatron should get to have his moment now. You can't count on another movie being released to save his shining moment for.
He was a joke in G1. What's changed?

Just got back from watching the movie. I loved it, enjoyed every second of it. I really enjoyed Optimus wielding a Great-sword one handed on Grimlock. My only complaint is the whole creators thing, I thought that the all spark was the source of cybertronians in the movie universe. I feel like this is the best TF movie, the ending was so satisfying as well.

I think the point the original poster was trying to make is that we had to infer answers to all of the above plot holes, because the movie was lacking scenes to provide any context for what was happening. Now I'm not saying that you're answers were wrong or that all movies have to spell out everything, but I think a movie's story should have better quality control than that.
Forgetting that it's a Transformer movie, a Michael Bay Transformer movie, it's still a huge budget mainstream blockbuster movie that a lot of people put time and effort into. Shouldn't the script quality be better than that in terms of loose ends, pacing and characterization?

I like the TF movies because they DON'T explain everything. That's why I get so pissed when people say you have to turn off your brain to enjoy these movies. You really don't. You understand the movie more if you actually pay attention and think about things instead of taking everything the movie says at face value, without going any deeper.

Oh trust me, I hate the "turn off your brain" argument as much as any. Story should be an important factor in whatever movie you make, and it's not like a movie about alien robots from another planet is a brain-dead concept with no deeper merit or potential for compelling stories.
I just hate deliberately withholding information, major or minor, with the promise that it'll all make sense if you read the tie-in comics or watch the sequels. Much like Prometheus, I dislike when you ask questions or have legitimate grievances about the plot and the only response you get is "well, I guess you'll have to pay for the sequel to get any answers." That's not engaging storytelling, that's holding my interest and sense of closure hostage.

And he didn't. He had 2 or 3 lines, he complained about how the Autobots were ruining everything, then just gave up, saying "Eh, I'll get you later".
He started the entire uprising and gave a speech.
As I recall, that "uprising" was crushed within minutes.
Megatron's always been a **** joke in Bay's films and, frankly, I'm sick of it.
He in the animated film was close to epic after with him all wonko post movie he went downhill with cyclonus being a better leader ... >:oP
Plus, a lot of time has passed since G1 and Galvatron. We've got significantly more budget going into the movies and, supposedly, the writing staff. Shouldn't we expect some kind of evolution in terms of the quality of villainy?
Since then, we've had a range of Transformers villains, from charismatic BW Megatron to noble Armada Starscream, and even those are over ten years old now. This characterization of Megatron/Galvatron is the best they can do?

I was born and raised at the end of the beast era, been through rid(I think it is boring), UT, animated , bay verse movies, prime (loooved it) and now looking back,I think that even though it is plagued with animation errors UT has a place in my heart which I started with my enjoyment of the franchise

I hear ya. I unironically own and watch Armada because of how much attention is given to both sides in terms of development. That Starscream is one of the most interesting in the whole franchise. I missed Energon and Cybertron, but I've seen enough clips of the latter to know that it's a fun, ambitious story with unique characters, worlds and epic stakes.

Am I the only one looking forward to the explanation of the Knight's Terminus? Does anyone think they'll explain it in the sequels?
I Am.

Agreed. It's what makes Seibertron such a good place to come to. It just seems like everyone who is coming out of the woodworks has a lot to say. I wish I could read it all, but I'm mostly glancing at the high points.

If you remember Rodimus threw Galvatron out of Unicrons head and it landed head down into a flame pool on Char. The landing and pool damaged its head which was shown by spark glitches when Cyclonus pulled Galvatron out. Galvatron sorta mellowed out after The Return of Optimus Prime part 2.
