Beginnings Prequel
- Motto: "Life is like a triple-X choose your own adventure..."
- Weapon: No Weapon
Still undecided on which DVD to get so I've been trying to find any info on the Walmart prequel DVD, reviews...whatever. Not much luck, but found this:

Says it's only 19 minutes! If this is accurate, would that sway your choice to the 140 minute bonus feature disc instead? I was thinking I could just rent the bonus feature disc from netflix, but if the prequel is only 19 minutes long...sounds kinda lame.

So escentially this is the same length as a half hour sitcom episode on TV minus the commercials. :p

And, if I understand correctly, it is essentially an animated version of the four prequel comics with narration and sound effects. Something tells me it will be animated in the sense that they will move static images around the screen.

If that's the case...super lame

That would indeed appear to be the case.

Honestly? Five minutes into it I was already thinking that it was better than the movie... and that impression had been firmly cemented by the time I finished watching. This 19-minute animated comic book had more actual Transformers action than the entire 140-minute live-action film. Heck, even its characterization of the TFs was superior. The Decepticons had speaking roles!
Their voices rocked, too.

This is the first comic
This is the one part comic... the one that came out all as one. The four part series has much more Decepticon involvement. I think you can get it at Target. Shows Starscream, Barricade, Blackout, Bonecrusher, and wreckage all come down to earth. Also shows them fighting on Cybertron. This version of beginnings is the other version. The one part comic.
They should have done beginnings on that series instead of this version.

From the aspects of sound--it gets an A+. The voice actors do a good job, and for the most part they have the actors from the movie doing the voices (with the exception of FRANK WELKER voicing Megatron--yes, you heard it right) and the sound f/x sounding natural.
The actual animation... well...
...they skimped out on. There were a few things that "moved" but the animators never bothered to fill in any missing background scenery whenever they moved an object (leaving a black shadow behind the moving object). If it were done by a fan, I'd say "cool animation" and then give him some pointers on using photoshop...
...but as a professional piece, it feels like they could have done more in translating the comic scans to animated forms.
And on that note... just finished putting the final touches on the last scene of The War Within (MY cartoon project). All that's left to do now is to polish off a few earlier scenes, send it over to tfcog for sound f/x and background music... and voila!

The last part is here:

And... I'd been thinking of buying the Walmart version as a second copy, but I'll likely pass now. It is cute animation, the Decepticons' voices are great - Hooray for Frank Welker, and the different Starscream voice is interesting in a good way - and Peter Cullen is awesome, of course. But it's very *simplistic* animation as well, and all of the human voices sound kind of amateurishly done. Finally, Bumblebee just really shouldn't have a laid-back British accent (and I usually like British accents).
It would make a great extra download from the movie site, but it's a bit weak as a commercial release, IMHO.
