How to take care of your collection...

Postby Enigma Blackdragon » Thu Sep 13, 2007 4:06 am

Hi there!

I'm finally starting up a transformers collection of my own, but after seeing a lot of yellowed figures I'm wondering how to best store them.

Do you have any tips and such so my figures wont be miscoloured after just a few months? or do you have any guide or such I could read about how to take care of ones collection?

Thanks a lot ^^

Weapon: Turret Gun
i dont think its possible for yellowing to occur in a few months.

Most transformers that have yellowing on them are g1 made from mostly white plastics like g1 jetfire.
The plastics yellow due to exposre to UV light and chemicals found in smoke will often speed up the process.

other discolurations are often due to the same reason - direct sunlight being the most obvious culprit

Keep them out of direct sunlight, extreme tempratures, make sure they get fresh air once in while if in storage, no smoking and hope for the best.

Hmm, smoke and white TFs really don't mix. Not to mention, after a hwle the tar forom the smoke builds up a layer on everything. I've had to clean off G1s that came from a smokers house and its no fun.

I smoke myself, but never indoors. Hmm, asides from keeping everything ziplocked and then taking them outside to get them some air once every 6 motnhs, I have no clue how to help you. Unless you can find some type of air tight displays?

I smoke around them but I have a cleaning rotation in that every week there's a group I clean so they're not building up tar.

Snowcat died of secondhand smoke however.

Cleaning them off won't help.

It's a chemical contamination of the plastic.

Awww crap. Oh well, I don't care how yellow or dirty they'll get, they're mine and I'm going to keep them.

Dont smoke near them, keep them out of direct sunlight thats about all you can to to avoid yellowing short of keeping them in the box. Otherwise put them in a glass case and/or dust/play with them regularly and you should be fine.

Oh and if you wanna get fresh air without letting smoke in from your parents simply open a window! Unless you live near a bunch of factories or next to a motorway that should do the trick.

Thanks alot guys!
If it's only sunlight and smoking, then it shouldn't be any problems. I'm not a smoker, and I can easilly fix a spot where the sun wont reach them ^^

Guys, should I keep TFs with electronics in the box? won't the battery leak and ruin the toy?
How do I keep the shiny weapon of my G1 toy from yellowing?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Great question. I was going to ask that too. I think after a longggggggg time, say 10+ years, some acid would begin to leak from the batteries, but I don't know how much and what damage it would do.

I know I've seen AFA graded Movie Leaders on ebay, so they obviously still have the batteries in them. I guess only time will tell really.

If you open them up for display, remove the batteries. If you want to keep it MISP then leave them in and hope that they don't leak. That is about all you can do.
