TakaraTomy Transformers Masterpiece MP-28 Hot Rod Discussion Thread

I was hesitant about this figure at 1st, but I'm getting more and more convinced to get him. He would look good as a display piece among my other Hot Rods. Now, will HasTak ever update the Rodimus figure? (I don't count this one because this one is Hot Rod, not Rodimus.)

I mentioned upgrading the figure so it was more like G1, trailer and robot being separate pieces. I mentioned MP1&MP10 being examples of this, and for the most part G1 animation (ESPECIALLY his sequence in the movie) had them as two entities. They could then make a pretty spectacular transformer, with proper hands and able to hold the full size matrix and everything else we could wantRodimus Prime wrote:Now, will HasTak ever update the Rodimus figure? And I would definitely buy it. And keep all of the other ones I have too

I think rodimus prime will be done again for sure. I would think they'll wait maybe another year or so before looking at doing prime but I do think he will come seeing as how the crew are close to being rounded out. It's easy to do a rodimus figure too because it has no licence so I'd kind of expect rodimus prime the same year we get sunstreaker.
Looking to swap a takara Titan class fortress maximus head for a Hasbro US retail Titan fortress maximus head.
Would alternatively buy a Hasbro US retail fortress maximus head on its own if anyone had one for sale.
PM me.

I didn't really have a major problem with the MP-09 figure, either version. A few minor gripes, but I owned 3 of them (2 TRU Rods and 1 Takara Rod) and they were all solid, no breaking parts. The figure's design didn't bother me, it would be alright if in the future they used the design and just updated it, perhaps with more durable parts. Not totally redesign him like they did MP-10.

Another animated gif from the internet:

The movie had Rodimus Prime transform all-in-one like Ultra Magnus and Motormaster.
Here's the OptimusTimelord remake of the scene with MP-9 (using Photoshop to do the impossible)--

3P figure "DX9 Carry" pulled it off. But not without a big spoiler on its back --

I really thought the transformation was the trailer popping out of no-where, hooray OptimusTimelord for proving me wrong

And Carry is amazing, I just can't pull the trigger on him for some reason. I had him pre-ordered and then cancelled it in favor of MP Wheeljack and MP Sideswipe.
I guess $150 is my self imposed limit on TF purchases, and he's $159

Hooray MP Hot Rod!!

Like Peaugh said this is better in hand; but there's the problem, Bumblebee, Ironhide, and now Hot Rod, all look better in hand. Takara needs to look at what they're doing, and make these figures look good period.

True they need to hire a better photographer as NONE of the Autobot cars looked as good on their sites/galleries as they do in person. Yep this also go for the Nissan group. It was actual in hand customer pics that made me consider most of these later MP figures.

Though, Hot Rod hasn't really been portrayed that much as a "cavalier" (more like just a "rambunctious teenager") in most of his fictional appearances, right?

If I wasn't totally convinced before, I am now. I don't even care about the accessories. That's just a great looking figure.

Iirc, TFA Hotrodimus was greatly praised despite having too big an upper torso. Wonder why the same issue is being dished out on Hotrod (the oversized torso)?

Because he was a $10 deluxe

That and the angled hood draws your eyes in such a way as to reduce the effect, I for one, maintain that it is still one of animated hot rods flaws - that, and never seeing it at retail

This.
That said, I'll still be buying this Hotrod. As soon as the KOs are available.

The problem here isnt the oversized torso but the fact that this big torso is big all around. Not just wide in the front, but with a giant backpack too. Animated Rodimus Minor was only wide in the front and didnt have a backpack. He was quite compact, unlike MP 28.

Agreed, if they had carbon-copied the transformation scheme, he could've been the best mp ever, I'd imagine.

Agreed, if they had carbon-copied the transformation scheme, he could've been the best mp ever, I'd imagine.
But then people would have been complaining that his transformation is too simple, unworthy of a Masterpiece.
As it is, certain car bits end up in certain places of Hot Rod's body, and his legs don't look like car parts, so the rear of the car has to go somewhere. And if they'd copied MP-9's transformation, he wouldn't have such a large backpack but it would have been a complicated figure for that size.
In the end, you can't please everyone.

A bit of both. The animated figure is just a very well done figure, for the character. This new MP Rodimus simply doesn't cut it for me. It doesn't look like a MP.
