Superhuman Samurai Squad in the US. The show here sucked, had one Lawerence brothers in it. But the toys were cool. I never saw this though. Yes it does look like Prime.

From ToplessRobot.com:• "Watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is marginally better than sh***ing your pants, but it takes a lot longer." Very well put.

Were the toys sold in the US?
I actually thought it was Brave Guardion:

Yeah, I had a few, not this one though. Had quite a few Power Ranger Mega Zord-like toys. I'm sure the Prime look-a-like is one of them.

I remember that show. The bots that combined were frickin sweet! Anyone remember what they were called? I wanna look them up and see if my memory is making them seem better than they were.
EDIT: I'm thinking of another show I think. Ah damnit. Anyone have a clue what it was called? I thought it was this but it isn't. Had like three brothers and they had robots like this and they could combine. Any idea?

Actually I was wrong, it's Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad in the US. Wiki didn't have much for the US version, but it did have some stuff on the Japanese show there.

I believe the toy is based on a Japanese show called Gridman. Here is some info. Apparently Takara made the toys so that might be why there is a slight influence with Optimus.
edit:
here's some links to the toys:
Gridman
God Zenon
Gridman & God Zenon
Dainadoragon
Gridman & Dainadoragon
Also here is a pic of the three main robots. There is Gridman (the red "Ultra Man" looking guy), God Zenon (the Optimus looking robot) is formed from three vehicles—a futuristic space ship, a drill tank, and a truck with cannons. The red dragon turns into a dragon and a space craft. The last two figures also split up and become armor pieces for Gridman.

Dunno. Beatle Borgs? That's about the only thing I can think of.

I take it back. These are the figures I was thinking of. I remember the giant dragon head gun. And I know for a fact it was released in the US.

yes, i had all the us toys to this for a long time. they were freaking awsome. also, gridman was named servo god zenon was zenon, forgot the dragons name.
but the gridman/servo robot, came out with multiple paintjobs and diffrent headsculpts too. there was a chrome one, a black one and a blue one i remember for sure.
there were also smaller, much less detailed versions of them too. however, from what i saw of the toys themselves, id say the japanese versions must have hadlights and sounds, and the american release had them taken out.
there was a role play weapon too. the sword and shield that combine into either an axe, or a super sword.
they were great toys, but i had to sell them long ago to get a car, and i wasnt about to sell my tfs to do it.
ide love to get them back though.

Man I remember the super sword roleplay weapon. I wanted that thing sooooo badly. I remember I also asked for the figures above....My mom ended up getting me the tiny (6 inch) figures that were worse than actionmasters. Worst Christmas ever.

Dude i remember having something that looked like a cheap verson of the combined form of Gridman & God Zenon, the gridman could only move his arms at the shoulders, and the others didn't form a separate figure, they only joined onto the Gridman thing.

I don't know if they were ever sold at Toys R us, but I got mine at wal-mart back in 1993. I was always a little discusted with them tho, the dragon's cannon and servo were both suposed to have electronics in them and they'd been gutted for the US release. They are nice robots tho, I've still got them on my TF shelf.

Only place I remember seeing them was at Kmart back in the day. Least I think that's where it was. It's all a giant blur anymore.

I remember getting the three large figures and a mini figure when this was out. I ony know the US names for all of them.
Servo and Zenon combined into Synchro(the big figure shown at the first post) whereas Zervo and Drago merged into Phormo(the one with the wrist lasers). I also have the mini Synchro figure.

I'm pretty sure they were sold in fall of 1993 through 1994. And they were sold in TRU. That is where I picked up my figures. In addition to the large figures in my previous post, there was a smaller set of Servo/Gridman with either the dragon or God Zenon. The Servo figure was about the size of a Marvel Legends figure and the (which had slightly different paint jobs) other figure would transform just like its bigger counter part with one exception—you couldn't make God Zenon from the three vehicles; just use the armor pieces on Servo). When these guys came out; I picked up the smaller sets instead of the larger ones. I really wished Ipicked up the bigger sets though....
edit: these are the sets that I picked up:
