I have a question about customizing MP Starscream/Skywarp

Posted by HoosierDaddy Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:41 am

I watched a youtube video of an MP Starscream review a couple days ago and the guy customized the plastic part that hangs down from the waist in robot mode. The way he did it made the figure look much cleaner. He said there were tutorials on how to do it on sites such as this one. Can anyone direct me to a tutorial how to do it so I can customize my Skywarp like that? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Here s the video i am talking about. At 8:20 is where he points out the customization.

Also, any advice on how to tighten up lose joints? It seems to be a huge problem especially on the animated figures.

I'll try that for the loose joints. Is there any info on the MP Starscream/Skywarp customization?

I don't know of a link, but I think all they're doing is popping the hip kibble off the ball joints and attaching them to the legs...then I think they're cutting off the ball joint pegs from the hip. I don't have the fig in front of me to see if they're doing anything to that kibble piece or not, though. You can basically do a reversible test run of the mod just by popping off those pieces and plugging them into the legs, then decide if you want to proceed with any permanent modifications by cutting parts off...and I'm not sure if they're gluing the kibble on, not that it's necessary to glue it, but I don’t think there's really much reason for them to detach with that mod.

OK. Thanks for the info. I'll just inspect my Skywarp and see what looks feasible and give it a shot.

It involves more than that. The top of the part attached to the leg has been sawed off and attached to his back. The part attached to the leg is on a sliding joint so he can stand in bot mode.

I'm thinking about having a go at this. If I do I'll make a tutorial as I go but I have to finish another custom first.

There are some pretty sweet customs in this link. Too bad I don't have the balls to try most of them. Although I suppose I could on my Hasbro Skywarp, but there's not much point since I have the Takara one on display.

Great advice and thank you all for input and links. It's a great help to me. Appreciated.

Mykltron, I'll look forward to your tutorial. When you do it, maybe you could pm me and let me know you put it up. I will probably attempt my custom before you get a chance to post your tutorial but I'd still enjoy seeing it. Thanks.

This Tutorial is not what he's asking for at all. It requires taking the fin panels off during transformation and putting them on his back. HoosierDaddy wants it so the panels stay on the leg during transformation, which makes him more G1 accurate and improves stability. He has minimal contact between feet and ground so moving mass from the hips to the feet will help with balance.

This Tutorial is not what he's asking for at all.

Actually, the video link in OP is for Peaugh's review of MP Starscream - i assumed that OP wanted to know how he did that mod, hence my posting of the link to Peaugh's tutorial on tfw...

Sorry, I didn't look that far down! I've seen the mod at the top before so I just stopped there.

I've done one leg. My version will allow more flexibility on where to put the leg panels than the version in the link, thus improving balance further. I've taken lots of pics so after I've done the other leg I'll write a tutorial for my mod. Should be up by 21:00 GMT on the 3rd.

By the sound of it, your mod could be better suited to G1 accuracy - looking forward to it.

Looks wise it's no more accurate than that the mod down the bottom of the page in the previous link but the advantage is that the tail part can be used for stability.

Here's a pic:

You'll notice he's standing perfectly well with only one leg panel.
