Oooooooooooooooookay then, that was a fun read.
To answer a question, here is what I like about what IDW has done.
My very first comic book I got was Spotlight: Trailcutter with his Thrilling 30 toy. Loved the read, made my favorite TF of all time seem like such an interesting guy. He tries to be happy, but he's an alcoholic who feels underappreciated and feels like he's a waste of space at times but is loved by others despite this, even if he doesn't really see it. It also introduced me to Whirl, who has proven to be one of my favorite TFs of all time too. He never got to shine before MTMTE, and he has shown bright. His suicidal character that is just filled with rage from a life ruined long ago that has slowly grown to have some emotions that shine through with heavy hints of his asshole personality make him such an interesting character. I refer you to this retweet of mine that sums up my feelings on Whirl, and to some extent Cyclonus:
https://twitter.com/hg_manifold/status/ ... 7561809920With Spotlight: Trailcutter in the bag, this was around the time MTMTE 21 was coming out, cause I started reading Va'als reviews and trying to figure out who all was on the cover of issue 21. And then I bought the entire MTMTE run, and then RiD, and then I bought all 8 hardbacks covering everything before that. I will admit I did not enjoy All Hail Megatron that much, or the 2009-2011 ongoing, save for Thundercracker, who thanks to the 2nd half of that series and the recent Transformers comics has become my favorite seeker, and one of my favorite cons of all time. Seeing a seeker who is still so bloody lethal and can easily hold his own try to live in peace and get along with members of other races is great, and I have enjoyed his run. Similar thing with Cyclonus, an old patriot who is trying to keep going, has some pent up rage and hurt, and self harms rather than talks about it, but he has been great. He and Whirl are probably the best pairing of TFs that I have personally read and enjoyed, just beating out Dinobot/Rattrap and Bulkhead/Bumblebee from animated.
But the -ations period was good, I enjoyed EJ Sus art, and I liked the new and interesting style. Still classic, but refreshed, modern, and more realistic without going full on movie-verse (which isn't a bad thing if you do it right, unlike Don, I was brought into the fandom thanks to movies). Maximum Dinobots was fun, and the recent books post Death of Optimus Prime have been stellar too.
The real shining light though? Nick Roche and the Wreckers. Both series were amazing, I loved them, they made the Wreckers awesome for me, they made me care about a bunch of nobodies I had never heard of before, it made it even cooler when all the Wreckers started getting new toys. Roche made the Wreckers great, and he made some of the best stories in Transformers history.
As for art, Su did good. I wasn't a big fan of Guido, but after reading RG1, I am better with him, I definitely enjoyed him in that series. Griffith did some marvelous work with RiD, Roche is awesome, my 2nd favorite artist, and Sara Stone, Pitre-Durocher, and Zama have been great as well. But Alex Milne is my favorite, hands down. His art panders directly to my heart. It is so detailed, so thought out, you can read the same issue 10 times and find new stuff in the art everytime. His attention to everything is marvelous, and he truly is a spectacular artist, my favorite, no contest there. And I am super stoked he is doing Unicron because of the detail. Unicron is a frikkin planet ok? He cannot and should not be simple. Milne is the perfect artist for the Chaos Bringer, and the Chaos Bringer is perfect for Milne.
IDW gave us great character moments, some great characters, and some great art. They expanded upon several character's bios immensely, and the made old characters feel fresh and fun. Swerve, Whirl, Sunstreaker, Soundwave, Thundercracker, Shockwave, Arcee, Trailcutter, Prowl, so many good examples of characters who were done right and done fun. Not to mention some of the new and original characters. Nautica is probably the best new character we have gotten in a long time, she is very unique and very fun, my favorite of the ladies, and great fun with Brainstorm. Windblade, Victorion, Riptide, all well done and new.
Not to mention how every single character ever made was fair game. Animated Lightbright ended up with Sparkstalker, helping turn a con into a new character. Midnight Express and others in OP showing up. Bulkhead being a pre-war construction foreman (keeping his characterization there!), The beast wars guys, most prominently Tarantulas in Wreckers (Roche again!), it's all been so much fun.
I will be sad to see the series go. It took something at the time 20 years old, and ran with it for 14 years, and made some great stories, great new characters, introduced us to some great writers and artists, including the most detailed artist and the master of continuity themselves. But here's hoping whatever happens is good as well.
