Is the "war within" storyline part of the new IDW unvierse?

Discuss anything about the Transformers cartoons and comics! You can discuss anything from G1 to Cybertron as well as the comics from Marvel, Dreamwave, IDW and more!

No. Not officially. The War Within was produced by Dreamwave and IDW haven't taken any of Dreamwave's continuity as part of their own. However, I haven't read The War Within for a while so I don't remember if there's anything in The War Within that directly conflicts with anything IDW have done (or vice versa).

As far as I know one could probably use The War Within as TF origin for unofficial or fanfic purposes, though whether there's anything in the new Megatron: Origin book (which I'm yet to read) that contradicts The War Within I couldn't say.

No it's not.
IDW wants to go a different way than DW. The only thing that reminds of WWI are a few designs.

Leave it to Dead Metal to have the word 'Pronz' in his signature.

War Within is the back story for the Dreamwave G1 comics with a few points that do, or would have if both series had continued, tie the two together and the only noticable inconsistancy being that Blitzwing displayed triple changing abilities before Shockwave had actually developed the technology.

While IDW have reprinted the WW trades it unfortunately can't fit in with the main IDWverse. The first volume of WW sees Optimus become Matrix bearer after Sentinel dies at the hands of Megatron. In the IDW continuity Optimus doesn't have the Matrix. The last Prime that definitely did was the Golden Age Prime that was Galvatron's master on Cybertron and possibly also in the Dead Universe. So Optimus doesn't have it, at this stage it's a fair assumption that Sentinel didn't either and WW can't properly fit into the new continuity.

To cut a long story short, nothing - absolutely nothing - in the Dreamwave series is canon in IDW's new universe. Period.

There are a few similarities, but they're not in the same continuity. The closest tie is in the Beast Wars miniseries, as I believe it was developed from a story originally written for Dreamwave before they went under, and is in any case set within the existing US show continuity.

To explain the visual likeness between the War Within and Stormbringer Cybertronian modes, consider that both series were designed by the same artist (Don Figueroa) and that he's built up his own style of TF design which shows in both publishers' titles. More specifically, I'm given to understand that he didn't want to just throw out all the work he'd done for TWW and so kept a number of design elements on familiar characters, though often tweaking the details.

The difference in design of Megatron's Cybertronian form in IDW and the WW version is a good example of that.

Well, yeah, but I was only talking about in-continuity ties... :P

War Within barely made any sense with the DW G1 continuing series. Then Micromasters happened...

Thankfully IDW decided to ignore Furman and DW's "Major events in Cybertronian History/War Within" and start afresh with a brand new IDW "Furmanverse".

Since Furman was given plenty of time to map out his IDW Furmanverse, things have been far more consistent throughout all the books.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.
