Is Ultra Magnus a good idea?

Postby Roll_Out » Sun Oct 28, 2007 8:32 pm

Ok, so the leaked script prolly isn't real. But what about the idea of Magnus showing up in TF2? Is it a good idea to bring in another follower when basically the entire core TF group do nothing but follow orders?

He would really add nothing to the core dynamic of the group. They should bring in somebody like the Dreamwave Mirage.

thoughts?

I have to agree. He would really serve no purpose.....they already have Ironhide to play the brave professional soldier type.

IMO it would be interesting to bring in Rodiumus. But make him the revered elder statesman, kind of like Energon's General Rodimus. Could make for some interesting tension and a really cool toy.

They just need to tweak the character a bit. Instead of being a poor man's Prime make him a bit of a loner who does the jobs no other Autobot wants to do and commands respect because of it and has absoloutely no problem telling Prime where to shove things.

Thank you. For a bunch of people who are always saying "THIS ISN'T G1!!!" they sure do bring up G1 character traits all the time.

Ultra Magnus is essential. He is like the "other Prime" at least to me. The fact that his toy in G1 was a repaint of Prime is the reason.

But most importantly, since this is not G1, why do we need Magnus to be the guy who can't deal with it now and is just a wussy little version of Prime? We don't. Meanwhile, we have RiD Magnus, who caused **** to hit the fan. That's what we need, actually. We need RiD Magnus for this movie. Two Autobots of high authority who can't work together.

Yes, if he's done right.

But I would rather not, he's already been overused - everytime I hear about a new Ultra Magnus figure, my first reaction is to yawn. That can't be a good sign.

Well, I don't know how right any of them really were.

But this is the movie. It's not another cartoon toy line. The movie is a big deal. It's a special occasion. We need to have all the iconic characters, the favorites, the ones the public remember.

Actually, I'd rather not see any of the Season 3 Bots in the movie. (I know, Arcee was supposed to be in the movie, but instead of her, why not use Elita-One or one of the other Femmes?) Plus, at the point in time Transformers takes place, it doesn't seem right. I'd much rather see Wheeljack, or Sideswipe and Sunstreaker be introduced.

Who's to say he will be a follower. Not every Ultra Magnus was.Even in the dreamwave books you mention, when he first appeared he was pretty disapointed with Prime and his ways.I think that if they use him they should go with the characterstion or the RID Ultra Magnus. He felt that Prime didnt deserve to be leader and wanted to take the Matrix by force and bee the new leader.

It would be cool to see Magnus in the next movie. If he was the same as prime but with his trailer as armour that would be awesome.

Kup's my favorite figure, and he's a season 3 bot. I'd also like to see to see Springer reissued. Just not for the movie.

Isn't that exactly what they originally did with Ultra Magnus?

Something new please.

My vote for the HOF goes to my favorite Transformer, Kup, to the Headmasters (who still need new figures that aren't just the characters without their master components) and to seibertron.com for for being the ultimate TF resource.

Dude, where is this leaked script? I don't think that the official one has even been written yet, but I would like to read it anyways.

Burn wrote:They just need to tweak the character a bit. Instead of being a poor man's Prime make him a bit of a loner who does the jobs no other Autobot wants to do and commands respect because of it and has absoloutely no problem telling Prime where to shove things.

OMG, I really, really LOVE THIS IDEA! :x I don't know what I like more: The fact that we would have an autobot who acts like a complete anti-hero or that there is an autobot who would actually tell Prime to shove his opinion up his tailpipe.

B4 reading this I read an opinion blog of someone who rated the Top 10 Worst Transformers and Magnus was his #1 pic. After reading that, and laughing my @$$ off, I would have agreed that Magnus would NOT be cool to put into the movie like the way he was in the series.

I'll post the Magnus piece here since I think it is pertinent to the thread here, but the link to the entire list is HERE

-------------------------------------

#1: Ultra Magnus -- What, you thought I'd forget about this guy? So much wasted potential. Magnus is big, strong, looks cool enough, and was Prime's 'chosen one'. So where'd he go wrong? How can someone with this much going for him suck so bad?

I honestly believe that the writers hated Ultra Magnus so much that they purposely scripted him as a poopy character. You know, the people who write these stories usually have to work within specific guidelines - there's toys to be sold, so there's characters that need to be written in. To get revenge on this creative roadblock, they just made Ultra Magnus into a waste of time. It all looked so promising. Magnus had two very important things going for him: he had the matrix, and he was voiced by Robert Stack. Those are two of the biggest coups I can think of, but Magnus blew it by being completely unheroic. When queried by his soldiers over the safety of their lost teammates, his usual responses are 'I can't deal with that now!', or in other cases, 'I have no soul.' If you think that Unicron threatening Cybertron's existence and a whole horde of more powerful Decepticons being born is what constituted everyone calling it the Autobots' 'darkest hour', you're wrong. The reason things were so dismal was because they were being lead by a guy who seemed to want to kill himself.

I've long wondered why people hated this guy with such a passion. I think most of it has to do with the fact that whomever was talking about Autobot history had to recognize him as a former leader - something nobody wants to do. His stint as leader is sort of like the Holocaust era of the Transformers. We all know it happened, but the results were so horrible that no one wants to think about it. My feeling is that Ultra Magnus sucked long before the Transformers movie...we just weren't around to see it. Everyone's stomach turned when Prime named him leader, but the poor guy was on his death bed, nobody wanted to question his decision. Think about it, if a good friend of yours was on their death bed, and they told you that their dying wish was that you would march around for a week wearing a monkey suit and challenging people on their religious beliefs, even then, would you have the heart to say no? If you look real closely in the movie, you can see the Autobots squirm when Prime picks Magnus as his successor...but they had to show respect. The poor guy was about to turn brown.

Every decision Magnus made in his short stint as leader was ridiculous. He'd either shy away from tackling the problem, or suggest blowing up half the ship. Either way, the Autobots were screwed. The few times they could get Ultra Magnus to commit to a decision only brought them twice as many problems as before. Notice how none of the Autobots actually asked the Junkions to put him back together after the 'Cons blew him apart...think that's a coincidence?

Plus Side: He never complained after Hot Rod took hold of the Autobot Matrix. At least he knew he sucked.

As a Ultra Magnus fanboy I actually have to agree with what the guy said.

His characterisation in the movie and cartoon was an absoloute embarrassment and didn't fit the look the character had (that being a big tough no-nonsense type character).

Dreamwave came along, and we all know the crap that ensured from that. Yes, he really was just a white Prime wrapped up in armour and that gave Hasbro a license to produce as many cheap white Prime repaints as they wanted and call them Ultra Magnus.

IDW however saw the potential of Magnus and gave him the characterisation he so rightly deserved.

So a bit of a mix between IDW and RiD Magnus would be a nice for the movie. If only I could tolerate those pug ugly movie heads. :-(
