2nd week box office potential

Postby Robinson » Wed Jul 11, 2007 3:44 pm

Now I know its not specifically transformers related, it does have to do with potential box office for this weekend.

Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix earned an impressive $12 million from the Tuesday going on Wednesday midnight screenings. The screenings took place in 2,311 theaters. The fifth installment in the popular franchise opened fully this morning in 4,285 theaters, the second-widest ever trailing only Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (4,362).

This opening foreshadows a huge first five days for the film. "At World's End" brought in $13.2 million its first night with screenings that started at 8pm. Transformers recently earned $8.8 million from its first evening with screenings that began at 8pm.

Oh I have a feeling that Potter will make a dent in the profits for the second week, but the movie's made it's money back and then some. TransFormers is still a hit and a success, no matter how much business Potter does.

Oh No doubt, but it does go to show that even with a fanbase that spans 20 years, this movie could have had better numbers.

Considering how bad box office numbers have been I'm sure the powers that be are very satisfied with the numbers TF pulled in.

Please keep in mind this film was kept within a reasonable budget.

I know, while almost 300 million in a weeks time is good you cant help but to wonder "what could have been"

The point of the original post does not reflect that Transformers opened in far less than a half of the number of theatres for it unadvertised monday screening.

I bet Transformers will be in the top 2. I went to to see Harry Potter today and a lot of people in line with me to get tickets were going to see both movies.

im sure the second week numbers will be trash....if you ask me this movie is a dud....aside from all the joy that is praised on his board and what not...the reality is this movie needs to do about 210 domestic to garner a sequal and as of now it aint happening....potter mania will be around for a good minute while tf just chokes in the theaters.

According to the figures you are way off.

The movie has made $173,466,052 in 8 days, so it could chug along at 10 million a weekend for 4 more weeks and still beat your "estimate" lilcarus. Let alone weekday totals its done 18 million just the last 2 days

how is that....do you know how the economics of the movie industry work....well its like this a production company doesnt not see a dime of world wide gross until way down the line and even then its about 35% of the total overseas number...everything gets chopped up between the movie distributer and the exhibitors....this deal favors the exhibitors after the initial buzz has worn off....these numbers you see dont mean **** if it doesnt pull 210 domestic....they still have to recover all the media money they spent on promoting this film....i just dont see this film making the dollars it needs to yet.....potter week will tell us all if the movie gets a sequal or not.

I get real tired of every naysayer who is grasping for any last 'failure' limbs that will prevent them from slipping down into the abyss. Give it up already. I respect people who have gripes about the movie compared to what they wanted it to be but the failure card is not an option.

Spiderman 3 and POTC 3 did not make 300 million in the first week, those are thier totals towards the end of their run. Transformers is on pace to easily do at least 275 million domestically.

But lets look at some recent examples of movies that made less than the 165 million Transformers is at after one week that earned sequels. These are total lifetime numbers under 165 million, not 1 week totals.

X-men
Fantastic 4
Meet the Parents
Scooby Doo

Oh and it will pass the Matrix sometime tonight, and National Treasure sometime tomorrow.

i'm not sure you know the economics of it yet...you're forgetting toys, DVD sales, international income and various other tie-ins. it ain't just domestic ticket sales bro.

i know companies don't make their money back right away, but it sure does help to get the production budget even on your first week.

P.S. don't be such a wad about this. are you wanting a sequel or not? if you don't, shut up.

No, he doesn't have to shut up. Besides, he's doing more damage for his point of view by opening his mouth. The more he talks, the more we see wrong with his "facts". In the end, he's only hurting himself, not us. So let him have his say, it'll just backfire in his face anyhow.

Also, if he thinks his opinion is enough to sway the box office and destroy the sequel, then he's not only mistaken, but he's delusional.

Okay, let's look at some numbers here.

Opening week, Transformers grossed $155 million.

Most of the big summer movies have had a 65% drop off.

That would put the second week at $54.25 million, which would give a total of $209.25 million. Right near the $210 million figure you're suggesting is critical. This movie has a strong chance of breaking $300 million domestic.

For exhibitors, a 10-15% take of ticket sales is considered large. Most chains make their profit off concession sales... thus why you get such high prices at the stand. Big ticket films usually have a miniscule portion, if any, going to the theatres. The films are the attraction that increases concession sales.

The international numbers are a little tricky. For some big budget movies, two studios will chip in to cover it, with one handling the domestic release, and the other handling the international. This happened in the case of Transformers, with Dreamworks handling the U.S., and Paramount overseas. However, when the Paramount purchase of Dreamworks went through, this put both ends of the film essentially under the same umbrella. Long story short? Paramount's pocketing all the receipts.

As for the marketing, bear in mind they're also seeing profits off all the movie-related products that are on the market right now. And as for the marketing campaign, there's a difference between the number they mention in press kits and the amount that's actually coming out of their pocket. They can technically say, for example, a Burger King or GM commercial promotes the movie, since it has movie ad bumper on it. BK or GM are footing the bill for that ad, but it's part of the movie's marketing campign. Some studios have even counted the toyline, and I wouldn't be shocked if Paramount did so, as well. I've not seen any actual figures, myself. I've seen a figure of $50 million floated around a few times, but a source is never given. A third of the film's budget seems incredibly high to me.

Again, people are free to have whatever opinion they want on the film. But to try and fudge the numbers to claim that it's anything but a tremendous success for the movie and for Paramount(its opening week exceeding internal expectations by $55 million) is reaching.
