DEKALB, Ill. - DeKalb Police say a gunman who opened fired at Northern Illinois University is dead. Authorities say the gunman started shooting in a lecture hall on Thursday, injuring as many as 15 people as students frantically scrambled over desks for cover.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital said on its Web site up to 15 victims were arriving, including three to four with head wounds.

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. in Cole Hall near the King Commons, a central gathering place on the 25,000-student campus, according to the Web site.

DeKalb is located about 65 miles west of Chicago.

Yeah...it made the headline on the local news out here in mid-eastern Missouri...still breaking news here!


What is going on around here??? People walking into little municiple court houses and opening fire on council meetings....people just mowing folks down at a state colleges....

I dont know but it is scary. It seems whenever someone is mad they think the answer is to take a gun and kill as many people as they can.
Are you close to Kirkwood? That was a wake up call for city councils here. I get my local news out of Springfield. I guess they are really taking that seriously. We live in a small town just west of Springfield where my husband serves on the council. He is not paid except for the occasional bellacher who has to complain about everything. Several of the members of our council have been threatened. That scares me there are a few scary people around here.

WHY GOD WHY?! Why does this keep happening? Is everybody going nuts or something?

This one hits close to home guys. I know a girl that goes to Northern. Haven't talked to her in a long time. I don't know how to contact her just to see if she's okay.

Dakalb. I live about an hour and a half or so from there in the nose of Iowa. This. Is disturbing. It does play some important signifigance in my family especially. My closest cousin is going there next year on a free ride scholarship. He looked all over, from here to Buffalo, NY. He chose N IL. Hm. I wonder what his plans will do now. He's already signed with them. Man. Wow. This will bounce back and fourth on the emails at my house. I hope he'll still be okay with going now. Hm.

From what I've heard on some of the news sites, the gunman's now roasting in hell via suicide. Good riddance to him.

It's like it's the "in" thing to do when you're at your wit's end.

Malls, campuses, high schools, etc...when is it going to end? How is it going to end? What do we have to do to keep people safe?!

I graduated from NIU in 2005. I've spent the last few hours trying to get in contact with some of the people I know who are still there. I can't even express how much this sucks.

I cannot believe those people are going to show up People like that give christians like my family a bad name. I think those people are just out for a little fame and nothing else. I sure hope that one biker group that uses the flags to make sure the family does not see those people are there too.

I hope the entire student populace shows up at these funerals and shows how united a community can be, especially in the face of crazed lunatics.

In this city, they just enacted a law forbidding protesting funerals of law enforcement officers, public servants and soldiers within 500 yards of the event. They still try, but there is also a couple motorcycle clubs that position themselves around such funerals and their job is to run off those kooks! And they do a DANDY job of it too!

The people shot in Kirkwood had the most beautiful funerals! The officer's was the best, since he was the first man down and the only police officer killed. The whole city of Kirkwood (and people from all over the region itself..20,000 plus) showed up to usher the funeral cortege out of town. It was quite moving.

I knew people on the campus in Dekalb, but they were conveniently not around the scene of the disaster, and just heard the screaming and emergency equipment arrive....Some of them will not be going back to classes this semester!

And today, as if there wasn't enough nonsense, there was some joker caught at SIUE yesterday morning with a same mission as the moron up north. Luckily he looked suspicious to campus police and they called in the local cops, and they tossed the car, finding weapons (they haven't said what kind at this time) inside and a list of those he was after.

What are these people thinking when they get like that? I cannot figure it out!

It is a sad day we live in that people would use the death of hero's and innocent people to get on the news. One of our dear friends was the sheriff here for years. We would worry about him since he was really cracking down on the meth producers. He was swarn in at 10:00PM and raided his first meth lab 2 hours later. He was upset that a another guy who would not be tough on the meth producers was elected in the last election but I was really worried that he would turn up dead one day. He is mostly retired now except to be a baliff part time to keep from going stir crazy. It would be horrible if I could never again ask Jessica if she wanted to go see granpa Gary. I could not imagine the anger we would have if that church came to his funeral.

There is nothing good about this whole situation. It's just incredibly sad. A all-around good guy went crazy, killed a bunch of people in a classroom, and now the people grieving for their deceased family and friends will have to deal with this publicity-seeking homophobes. It just keeps getting worse and worse.
