I want to say this series ran in the late 80's but very well could have been early 90's...
anybody wanna take a shot in the dark here?
See, you threw me with the 'slightly larger than a Joe' bit, 'cause I was thinking of the little Joes, and Centurions were pretty big lads.
I had an entirely different toyline in mind, called Unifighters.
There were fifteen (little) Joe-sized figs (three from the Marines, who wore yellow, three from the Air Force in white, four from the Navy in blue, and five from the Army in red), and each had a big backpack that turned into a one-man vehicle. The vehicles could also combine in various combinations, but were designed to go together in teams; the Marines' vehicles combined to form a large helicopter, the Air Force got a big F-15ish jet, the Navy piloted a hovercraft, and the Army guys drove an enormous tank.
I think I may even still have them...
Good call on the cartoons too, Whisper. I have a Starcom video downstairs with three episodes; I'd quite like to get hold of some more sometime. Don't suppose there's much hope of a DVD release...
