Best G1 Spotlight episodes.

Postby Neo Tallgeese » Sun Nov 21, 2010 3:18 am

Weapon: Plasma Cannon
Transformers Generation 1 had teams featuring many many differnt Transformers once season 2 got into full swing. With so many characters it was impossible for the show to have to type of overall characterization of later shows such as Beast Wars or Cybertron. What we did have, was episodes that sometimes seemed to "feature" a main character or a team. Some examples include:
Sea Change- this a very heavy Seaspray episode
Changing Gears- we never heard this much about gears again
Money is Everything- This episode was primarily and almost completly about the Technobots.
Out of episodes such as these, which ones are your favorites and why?

I liked changing gears because of the hilarious exchanges between Gears & the Cons'. He was so damn cheerful about being enslaved.

My ultimate G1 favourite episode has to be Heavy metal war. In fact I think its actually my all time favourite episode full stop, from any continuity.

It not only introduced the Constructicons, but the writers had the foresight to pitch them in combat against the mighty Dinobots and it also featured that epic battle between Prime and Megs. This is an absolute classic!

About Dinobots and Constructicons, i agree, But the Optimus vs. Megatron fight was unfair as Megatron had cheated by taking other 'cons powers and easily defeated Optimus.
TRUE epic battle between the tho was actually in the Movie, at the end of Battle to the Autobot City, but the end result was the same, if not more even.

'Fire in the Sky'. To see Starscream and Skyfire there... it's honestly kinda heartbreaking for the two.

That was a great episode. I think its the only time we see Starscream act with any genuine compassion.

Two things sold it for me:

1. The look of absolute, utter shock on Starscream's face when they first find Skyfire. You can tell his long-term memory just kicked into overdrive.

2. Before their falling out, when they're talking... it's Starscream's voice, but no screech. No high-pitched whining. That's one of those little bits of 'extra distance' that puts season one of G1 above a lot of other TF product, IMHO.

I think the Ultimate Weapon may be the best Protectobot episode out there (also one of my favorites).

Fire in the Sky is great as is Money is Everything.

MTMTE had some great character moments.

Loved Ironhide's pursuit of the cons and subsequent rescue. He had some great lines:

"Stop talkin', tighten your shock absorbers and get in. We're goin' to make a new river!"

"Well, I'm tired of suckin' their vapor trail, I'll stop 'em!"

"Quit yappin, Bluestreak, this is ma fight!"

My favourite has to be "No way. Soon as Ratchet tightens a few bolts, I'll be right back in action!"

Forget Grimlock or Repugnus, Ironhide will always be the G1 Autobot's tough bot! Shame the Bay Ironhide is so different in appearance and portrayal, not once matching G1 Ironhide's charisma. Plus, Ironhide had a great death scene that possibly took a dig at his G1 toy.

I loved Hound and Mirage's chemistry and independant characterisations. Mirage had the best end joke of any 80's cartoon: "Sorry Prime, the ship was..... full!"

It was cool that he wasn't a typical goody two shoes with his desire to leave Earth.

I liked the ever upbeat, approachable and just plain likeable Trailbreaker.

Huffer had one of the greatest lines in any TF series.
"But we're not fighters like they are, Prime!"

Even as a kid, that line got me. The Autobots weren't your stereotypical heroes. They were victims themselves, with war forced upon them. Their camaraderie always reminded me of the old WW2 movies.

Starscream was, and is, a great character. He and Megatron had some great exchanges, wonderfully elevated by the tremendous talents of Latta and Welker.

The highly effective and ever loyal Soundwave is a relatively silent icon. I love the scene where he does the wave motion while telling Rumble, "Operation: Tidal Wave!" or his genuine concern for Ravage while fleeing the Ark.

Even Rumble got some nice characterisation. Small, tough and apparently fiercely loyal to Megatron, obviously in awe of Megatron's toughness.

I also love the scenes where the background Seekers attack the various fuel sources. They were more like the Borg than other thuggish, sadistic Decepticon stereotypes. They appeared barely aware of the humans, only attacking them when attacked. Concentrating on their mission with cold, machine like efficiency.

Oh if only Mr. Bay had conveyed all of the above in his films.

I always really liked Megatron's Master Plan. It is arguably the closest the Decepticons got to complete victory in those first couple of seasons. Not only did they completely turn the public opinion against the Autobots, but Megatron has their ship programmed to change course right into the sun, all the people in the city are enslaved to make energon cubes, and Dirge blows up Teletran 1.
It also has some scenes in it that crack me up! The little kid wearing the Megatron costume at the "Decepticon Day" parade cheering them on as they walk by, and Sparkplug exclaiming, "this makes me sick!" Then at the teen dance, Rumble is kicking it to the tunes, and goes, "yeah get down Soundwave!" This is followed up by some kid going up to Laserbeak and saying, "Laserbeak want a cracker?" The look on Laserbeak's face is as if he was thinking, "yeah, just you wait kid!"

:CON: I know this really isn't a "spotlight" episode, but it was one I enjoyed because I love Decepticons! :CON:

The Burden Hardest to Bear-I liked seeing how Rodimus Prime dealing with burdens of leadership.

Webworld-Galvatron's insanity was often used as a plot device to see him kick the crap out of other Decepticons but this episode showed how insane he was and how far Scoruge and Cyclonus' loyality to him stretched.

triple Takeover-from some vague advice from a panicked football coach, Blitzwing bombs a town, has a highway maze built and takes out four top Autobots. And then Scrapper builds a throne from them.
