Console Wars: Pros and Cons

Postby Shadowman » Fri Jun 08, 2007 4:28 pm

Motto: "May God have mercy on my enemies, because I sure as hell won't."
So, I thought I write up the Good and Bad of each console. You may agree, you may not. It's really your choice.

Microsoft Xbox 360:
Pro:

-Has been out longer, so it has a larger library of games.

-Xbox Live is well respected.

-Made wireless the "Cool New Thing" in gaming.

-Easy to find in stores, due to relative age.

Con:

-Reports of over heating (I think it's been fixed, though)

-Most games are Online-oriented, leaving the Single Player Guys (like myself) in the dust. (Though I expect this will change)

-Limited backwards compatibility with Xbox. (It's growing, though)

-Microsoft is not respected by a lot of people.

Sony PlayStation 3:
Pro:

-Sony is considered a Power House in the game industry. (Having taken out Sega without even trying. That takes some serious cahones..)

-Classical controller design, mixed with motion sensor.

-Home, a gorgeous social area.

-Absolutely GORGEOUS graphics.

Con:

-Extraordinarily expensive.

-Most developers are no longer Sony-Exclusive.

-Critics claim the the SixAxis motion sensor was taken directly from Wii.

-Sony claims that SixAxis is unable to have rumble with motion sensor, even though many people claim it's possible.

Nintendo Wii:
Pro:

-Nintendo is a long-standing company, and considered the beginning of Modern Gaming.

-Most inexpensive console on the market.

-Free online play, including an Opera-Based Web Browser.

-Don't like the Wiimote? A classical controller is available, and the Gamecube controller is also compatible.

Con:

-"Reports" of the Wiimote strap breaking, and flinging it into the TV. (A newer, stronger strap has been implemented, however.)

-Nintendo, is considered a "Kiddie Company" (In actuality, this is an exaggeration; Nintendo makes games that anyone can play, to appeal to a larger audience, as opposed to Sony's and Microsoft's largely T-Rated and M-Rated libraries. E is for Everyone, people.)

-Almost impossible to find in stores (A clerk at Circuit City claimed that they "Couldn't keep it on shelves")

-Wiimote is considered tiring; some people prefer just sitting down and using a normal controller. (Two of which are actually available.)

While I personally feel there's no such thing as a "console war", much of what you say is pretty spot on. Two things I'd add though, while the 360 is heavily Live oriented there is alot of good single player stuff out there. Tomb Raider: Legend, Hitman: Blood Money and Oblivion are all prime examples. However, it does suck not being able to download extra content like patches, such as the one I need for Oblivion. Second, the PS3 is a graphical powerhouse to be sure, but it has yet to realize it's full potential. Many people feel current PS3 and 360 titles are virtually identical in graphics.

Your forgot to add the Virtual Console to the list of Pro's for the Wii! It's constantly updated every week I believe(dont' have one, and haven't been on 1UP for awhile to see), but there's at least one new game released a week, even if it sucks. Plus, they're approaching 100 games, with Zelda II being the 100th. The games are also decently priced, and there are some certafied classics on there.

A con for the PS3 and Wii would be lack of games at this point, but I'm sure that'll change. And while 360 has a bigger library, it surprisingly only has one fighter currently(unless you go to X-Box Live Arcade): DOA 4. It may be cause the day of the fighter is practically over, but it's a tad surprising.

I am undecided in the Console War, having no next-gen system myself, but I may go to the 360 route someday, cause my bro has one, and I really like it. And then perhaps a day longer down the road when the Wii is readily available. It is getting kinda rediculous how hard it is to find.

Virtua Fighter 5 is slated to hit the 360 sometime in October.

Some things I think should be noted:

PS/3 has a blue ray player. If you want one, having it bundled is good.

Wii is the weakest hardware of the bunch. From most developer's words it's about the same as an Xbox 1, but who knows, maybe it'll surprise. Still, it won't reach the 360 or PS/3 quality in this lifetime as far as graphics/physics.

Also, although the Wii has free online play, does it actually have any online games out in North America? I don't think it does...

Really, I think all the systems are good, it depends what you want out of them. I have a 360 and I enjoy it. My parents have a Wii downstairs and they like that because they don't want to sit for hours online playing like I do. For me, the wii feels kind of gimmicky with all the party games and controller. In the long run, I think the PS/3 will start showing some stuff that's better than the other two consoles. If they figure out to harness the cell, there's a huge theoretical processing power there. Right now, though, some games are worse than the 360 versions for slow down...

And that is why Nintendo rules. They didn't try to go for uber new next gen graphics and hardware. They had a system that worked. The gamecube. They stuck with that, redesigned it, and made it innovative.

So using something that could support all the Wii games already isn't a weakness. When they need to, Nintendo will blow them out of the water with a better system, like it did with the GC.

As for the PS3. Yeah it will probably get a better library. The only good game for the Ps3 is Resistance. Everything else seemed to be something we've already seen before, or just really poopy.

But supporting blue-ray, forcing people to go with their type of dvds, thats just retarded, especially when that system then costs $600.

I don't have a Wii, but I want one, badly. Nintendo has always been good to gamers, and aside from the Virtual Boy, has had a badass track record.

The 360, I love mine. I bought the Elite the day it came out, which happened to be on my birthday, so I had the extra cash anyway. At first I didn't know why I bought it, played a couple games, found them boring, then the 360 just sat there. Then I found out I could hook the 360 to my computer and watch movies and shows I've downloaded, which is awesome as hell.

But, the 360 is an awesome machine, I only have 2 360 games right now. But KOTR/2, and my other XB games are keeping me busy until Assassin's Creed and Fable 2 come out.

Hence the currently. But it does have Rumble Roses XX(your sig reminded me), and while never having played either, isn't it sort of a fighter?

But after VF 5, what is there? The next Soul Calibur maybe, and then what? I've never been big on fighters, but it is kind of sad to see virtually none in the marketplace. Here's hoping the rumored Street Fighter IV is a reality.
