Early Father's Day Gift

Postby Shadowman » Thu May 22, 2008 2:13 am

Motto: "May God have mercy on my enemies, because I sure as hell won't."
My dad got a Wii. I wanted to get that out of the way early.

My mom called me into our living room, and showed me my dad's Father's Day Gift; a Wii. Apparently, I was the only person who didn't know. Hell, my dad knew about it beforehand.

That aside, we spent several hours after playing Wii Sports (Despite me constantly talking about it, she didn't even think about it), and my mom playing "Back-seat driver" despite having all the tech experience of an untrained poodle.

I've also learned that six-rounds in Wii Sports Boxing is not for the faint of heart. I am surprised by this.

The downside is that's it's not my console, which the last several consoles have been, so my usual freedom is quite limited; I could play PS2, or Gamecube, or Xbox from sunrise to sunset, and no one would think twice. Now when someone wants to watch TV, I have to find something else to do.

The upside (Aside from finally owning a Wii) is that I don't have to save up for one anymore. Hell yes.

I've got to find a list of games we should get. I have a short list already:

Red Steel (I don't care how bad it is, I still must own it!)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario Galaxy
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

My mom has also suggested Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.

Anyone have any games I should look into?

Red Steel isn't that good. It's controls make it difficult to play as you get further along. A few more months develpoment and it would've been solid.

No more Heroes, I hear is a good title.

I would also recommend using the VC you get some games. There are some good ones on there:

Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2(The american version)
Super Mario Bros 2 (The real version)
Super Mario Bros 3 (Only if you haven't beaten the GBA release and have some old ghosts to settle with)
Super Mario World (I'm pretty sure most everyone own at least 2 verisons of this game)
Castlevania 1 and 2
Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3
Legend of Zelda
Legend of Zelda: ALTTP
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Metroid (You may want to apss on this if you got the classics release or the Zero Mission version)
Super Metroid
Anything Street Fighter that isn't a sequel to a sequel and not a regular sequel
Anything Contra

Also I would advise waiting for Star Wars The Force Unleashed. Hopefully Lucas Arts if keeping to it's word and actually taking the time to polish this thing so we actually get another 3rd party game worthwhile. Just don't let his taste in games get the better of him. My dad perfers the "more realistic" games and has thus bought pretty crappy and cheap games for the Wii.

I suggested Virtual Console to him. A lot of classic fun to be had there.

Force Unleashed! I can't believe I forgot about that! Oh, he will enjoy that, I'm quite certain.

Seconded.

There are waaaaay too many good Virtual Console gems to list though. Two great (and easily overlooked) games for the Genesis are Mega Turrican and Wonder Boy in Monster Land III. Mega Turrican falls into the Contra mold of shooters and Wonder Boy is a great Metroidvania style game.

I keep making jokes about that game. I will buy it.

My mom is going to get that. Why pay $50 when I can have some other chump do it for me?
