I'm obsessed with Transformers.

Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

I'm obsessed with Transformers.

Postby Moonbase2 » Mon Jul 23, 2007 10:12 pm

Well, I'm a 22-year old woman, married for over three years, with two small children, with a happy, fairly unstressful life. However, in the past couple of months I have become obsessed with Transformers.

In the months leading up to the new movie, I became intrigued, especially since I liked Beast Wars as a child (we're talking a decade ago). But instead of being like, "Oh, that looks cool. I'll have to kill a Saturday afternoon with that movie", I became an instant Transformers nut. I'm talking like I learned everything little thing I could, brushed up on the terminology, the characters, everything. Now I own a decent amount of the toys, several comic books, I've seen the movie five times, I discuss everything Transformers on two different forums, heck, I even dream about it!

The thing is, I doubt this will be some passing phase, because I genuinely do enjoy everything about Transformers. But hopefully the full-blown obsession will die down (though it's not showing any signs). Does anyone else ever find themselves like this? I had OCD tendencies as a child, so maybe that explains my behavior. I will say, I don't let it interfere with my life to the point where my family is neglected. I'm just sure everyone is tired of hearing about Transformers when they talk to me! You'd swear I was a life-long fan.

No, no they won't. :P

I am a lifelong fan (well, as lifelong as I can be, considering I was seven when they came out), and aside from the rapidity of your study (which sounds pretty impressive), you certainly don't sound any worse than me. Anyone who's stupid enough to ask me about Transformers better actually be interested, otherwise they'll regret it sharpish - once I'm started, I take some stopping, although I'm trying to train myself.

I've got a pretty sizeable collection of figs (I'm sure it's over 700, but I've stopped counting, particularly since I have several duplicates and kitbashes and such, so I don't even know what to count any more), I get all the comics I can, all the figs I can (lack of money has made me calm down lately, but given the chance I'd probably have had all the movie figs by now, and everything else), I kitbash, I draw TFs, and I frequent two boards (Seibertron and Transtopia) and occasionally visit others.

I'm not crazy enough that Transformers is my whole life, but most of my passions are things I'll be totally into for a while, leave and then come back to later. Transformers has always been up at the top, and it's not going anywhere soon...

well the title was a pretty durn stoopid thing to say on one of the big tf websites, but that aside, aslong as you don't end up like that couple who killed thier 3 children through neglecting them and spending the time on dungeons and dragons instead, you will be fine

No, my kids aren't neglected in any way. Heck, my little boy plays with the little toys as well. People that let their children become so neglected they nearly die just astonish me.

I wouldn't assume everyone on here is obsessed with Transformers, but lately I have been. I go through little obsessive periods, like with Spiderman--occasionally I get obsessed with it, then it dies down after a week or so and I don't want anything to do with it for a while. I don't want to completely burn out on TF, as I do really like it.

I guess if I'm not hurting anyone or shutting anyone out or going completely bankrupt, then it's ok. Right?

I know, it looks silly to bring it up on a forum about Transformers. I will say that I don't have hundreds of figures and I don't do repaints or rebuilds or anything like that (it would be fun to try, but impossible with two kids under 3). Like I said, I'm a fairly new fan (with the exception of liking BW years ago) and I fell in love really fast, really hard. Spiderman was like that for me, too. When I was 12, I discovered the cartoon on Fox and became a Spiderman nut. I still love it after ten years, but not quite like Transformers.

That's how I came into Spider-Man too!
But after all those years I still like to read the comics, and punch anybody who hates Spidy.

I might eventually get into Spiderman comics. There are so many, and it ends up costing lots of $. I draw Spiderman, too, but he is kinda hard to make him look right. I miss the good ole days of rushing home to catch Spiderman. :)

I want to get the DVDs of G1 so my kids can see what a real cartoon is. I have two boys and I just don't think they make "boy" cartoons like they used to. Today kids are heroes in every warlike cartoon, not men. I just think that's a bit strange. Back in the 80s there were barely any girl cartoons. Nowadays there aren't really any definite "boy" cartoons.

Lack of Heroes:
That's actually a good point - about the role-models for boys in cartoons. The unfortunate side-effect of the rise of the Anti-Hero is that true heroes are looked upon as weak.

The Gladiator and The Lord of the Rings are all I've found that have strong heroes who won't do wrong, but that is displayed as a strength (such as when Maximus Desmus Meridius refuses to sleep with his old flame for memory of his murdered wife and son).

Even Optimus Prime's death in the 1987 movie portrays his weakness to be his compassion - he wouldn't risk shooting Hot Rod.

Me and my Son:
I recently started collecting some Transformers, especially any Knock-Offs I can find, because it's enjoyable to play with Jose Francisco, and he loves cars and robots with guns. Like me at that age, Transformers just speak to three things that are cool at once - cars, robots, and their mechanical genius.

TMTDNR (Too Much Text, Do Not Read)
I have a two-year old Latin-American baby boy who has five helpings of "Latin Machismo" and zero of "white boy" in him. I was always careful with my toys, polite, supportive - my son is a leader; his charisma attracts anyone close to his age and any adults susceptible to his wiles; he seeks out challenges - he's driven. I'm analytical; I lead when I see the people around me are incompetent.

On Your OCD:
Make sure you spend time and money on other things; and each things has a balance. I play a lot of videogames, but I also play on our family Wii a lot (multiplayer with kids), or have nights I just run around torturing small children (3 girls, 1 boy). As long as you have a balance in your life, it is okay to have a primary hobby.

Moonbase2, I'm a Transformers obsessed married chick too. For me this is a good thing. :D I was 8 when the original Cartoon blessed my T.V. time. I was as obsessive as any 8 y.o. can be. I popped out of the womb as an over imaginative tomboy with a extreme love of anything associated with cars. Transformers was my little kid catharsis. I stopped watching it as I got closer to my preteens and got boy crazy.

Last year, when I saw that the movie was coming out, my obsession started again. I'm am once more obsessed mostly with the G1 continuity of course. I feel like I've recaptured my youth somehow with this. I modify cars as a hobby. I'm OCD when it comes to that and it's expensive, I think this obsession is a little healthier for me and my wallet. :D I'm glad I found this site because I realize that I'm not the only one. I get a lot of crazy looks from my coworkers for my Transformers collection. I'm stationed overseas and my barracks room has become a haven for all things automotive and Transformer.

I like that here, I can talk about stuff and no one will think I'm a nut! :D

Hardly would we think you're strange. Some people think my lovely lady is a nut when she gets out the metronome and drills, drills, drills on the Piano - but that's how Classical Piano is done.

I'm enjoying watching my kids have fun with Transformers and playing with them. Talk about reliving your childhood.

I too am a G1 fanatic, but I don't care to recollect the G1 toys: for one, they're so old and valuable at this point you can't play with them, and for another, if you want that little mobility in a Transformer, get a Knock-Off: you can play with it and it won't cost you much. I like the new Classics and I hope they continue.

Transformers is a worth while hobby. You gets loads from the money and time you put in, and it's definetly something to share with the kids when they're old enough.

And it does no harm to anyone.

For the most part, there is also a happy, thriving community. Apart from some of the newcomers, people here are friendly and will take care of your tf needs anytime of the day!

Sounds like a hardcore start to an enduring fandom. When you get into it at first, there's enough to learn (and buy) that it's easy to become a little obsessive, but provided you don't get addicted to Ebay, it'll probably settle into a steady interest. And welcome! ('Course by now, you've rapidly built up more forum posts than I have in the last year.)

I'm having fun discussing it with folks on here. My last forum is dead (granted it's a movie website, with a single forum for Transformers). I've cut down a bit on the spending (which was a lot) and am slightly less obsessed, but still enjoying it. I have intermittent Spiderman obsessions, but it is a general interest of mine in the long run.
