While I was at work, one of the work collegues came up to me after some banter and started mouthing off at me. He knows my family come from sheffield way.

He started saying "use the queens english when ya speak" and i just ignored it. Then he started singing "Yorkshire scum, get out of Brum"

I got pissed off with him and I am tempted to report him to management for racism and bullying.

What do you guys think?

Should I or what would your opinions be?

Being a snob, I've always thought that everyone should speak with the Queen's English. R.P. is a delight to my ears!

In all seriousness, I would report him instantly. I lived in Sheffield for a year and while I honestly couldn't understand a lot of people :oops:

, I found out that there are really nice people all over the country. There's nothing wrong with people from Yorkshire! As I say, I made many friends in Sheffield. One of my exes and good friends is from York. I have friends in Harrogate and Tadcaster. It goes on. At the end of the day, accents, places of birth, etc. shouldn't matter.

What this fellow is doing is unfair. It's a prejudice, essentially. It's also bullying. So report him. He'll do it to others, as well.

Is he actually a Brummie? Does he speak with the Queen's English?

Well, if you truly feel berated after what that jerk has said, then I say talk to him about it first before getting anyone else involved. If it doesn't get resolved by then, then you should report him to management and file a complaint.

Thanks for your support over this...I'd like this thread kept open and people posting so I can keep everyone updated.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna go into the Managers office and file a complaint against him and his actions. It doesn't affect me, it also affect my mom and grandparents, since they moved to the west midlands from sheffield way.

In essence, he's insulting them as well as me

the ironic thing is he reckons he could "deck" me in a real fight. He doesn't know I've studied boxing and I'm currently green belt in Thai Kickboxing. If he does want a brawl, I do have him well and truely pwned.

But I'm not gonna stoop to his level of name calling and threats of violence. I'm gonna win this battle using my mind and do it the way the law says

This is really good advice. Nobody respects a tattle tale, even if they are justified. Talk to him. Don't threaten to tell management, it'll read wrong. Just tell him that if he's joking, that you find that kind of joking offensive. If he really is bullying, start a log, write down times and events. Do you have a coworker that could mediate? If you give him a chance to fix his actions, and have had him hear it from someone other than you (but not a boss), and he's still a bullying hypocrite, then go to a manager with an account of everything you've tried. If you are clearly the rational, thoughtful, and self-reliant kind, it might even come out as reflecting well on your record. Managers do not like to be handed other people's problems, especially when they could be solved without them.

Keep a log, though, just in case this comes back to bite you.

Because race doesn't go as deep as what kind of English you speak.

At least, I think it doesn't. :-?

Because I can very easily tell anyone in this country to start speaking Northern American English (The most common type in this country), and not New England English, Southern English, or any of that. And I'd get away with it!

In America, we call that kind of person "A Total Asshole." Or, for our friends across the Atlantic, "A Total Arsehole."

Really, I figure that the whole Ass/Arse debate comes from accents. In some British dialects, "Arse" could sounds like "Ass," which us zany Americans could misinterpret as "Ass."

I met with him yesterday after work and spoke to him. Not good, he got pissed at me for even thinking about going to management with this.

He refused to speak to me on the shop floor or anywhere kunless its work related. Instead of reporting him properly, I spoke to management and filed an official complaint against him rather than jump oin him with a grievance. Its then up to management to investiage this

He was less than chuffed when I told him and he said "if you lose me my job, you'd better get measured up for a coffin!"

which is ironic, since he got busted again, cause several people heard him, including a manager, who I know very well...but anyways..its under investigation through work

he still reckons he can KO me, but don't know I'm learning Thai Kickboxing. I've only been doing it 6 months. I know enough subdue any attacker and make em think twice about doing it agaon...

If I might offer a little bit of advice on the matter of martial ability...

After a good bit of time in practice and in thinking about fighting philosophy, you're going to realize that your skills in martial arts/budo are better put towards making a bad situation better, rather than making a bad situation worse.

I've been in at least one situation where I was confronted by a very drunk ass-hat who was being more than threatening. I've been in training for 7 (8?) years now, maybe more, I dunno. It doesn't matter; you punch, you kick, you fall down, you get back up. It's all the same.

At any rate, I could have dismantled the guy, it would have been easy and I would have been correct in doing so. I started off, by offering to buy him a shot or beer though. It made it hard for him to stay mad at me and after one or two of those, he passed out, we left the bar, no one got hurt or arrested, everyone had drinks, and no one lost an eye.

Just, you know, think about all your options before you act with your fists. (5 years ago, I would never have thought I'd say that

as i said in an earlier post, I am willing to use the kickboxing if he wants to play the violence card. Right now, I'm letting the law work its course
