Here's a picture of a new car from Nissan. It's a three-seater, battery opertated, "bubble car". :P

Oddly, the driver sits in the middle.

Have you guys heard about the yellow dust that is inundating S. Korea and Japan. The yellow dust blows from the Gobi Desert in Mongolia each spring. I woke up and saw this outside my apartment. It looks like fog but it’s actually dust. The dust is so thick that visibility is reduced to ¼ mile. Take a look at the pictures.

But isn't the JSDF technically an army, though not in name? Or am I missing something?

After WWII, the Japanese constitution was rewritten so that Japan could never have an army or weapons that could be used in offensive situations. But you are correct, they do have reservists, but their ability to fight is very limited.

Interestingly, Japan has been criticized by other countries because it does not do enough to help police the world. So last year, Japan wanted to send some of their reservists to Iraq. However, their laws hindered the troop's involvement. I think in the end their troops were allowed to go under humanitarian efforts only.

Better than Germany, their troops aren't allowed out after dark...

What's the wildlife like out there?
I know there are spiders the size of a human head, but
what kind of beasts reside in Japan exclusive to the islands?
Poisonous snakes, insects, small furry mammals, swooping birds.
With the limited size of space available to the average homeowner, do many people have large pets?

I ask this question a lot because wildlife is virtually nonexistant in the cities, except for big crows that claw through the trash. Human influence and expansion have really played a toll on their wildlife. At one point there used to be bears, but not anymore.

Some of the common critters you'll find in the country include- cranes, small birds, and sometimes monkeys (in certain places), and frogs. Insects seem to do pretty well and you can commonly find Praying-Mantis, huge walking sticks, and cicadaes (sp?)

Yes, people have tiny dogs, which they love to dress up in clothes.

I've just finished reading over this thread while listening to the hockey game, and I'm going on the record as not wanting anything at all to do with Japan aside from their robots.

How do the Japanese feel about the otaku-tachi outside of Japan downloading what's airing on television in their homes? I've always wondered if they were as anal as the United States.

I just read this. Are you getting a new toilet?:

Free repairs to flammable toilets
A Toto bathroom
Toto is Japan's leading toilet manufacturer
Japan's leading toilet manufacturer Toto is offering free repairs to 180,000 toilets after some of them caught fire.

There have been three incidents of the electric bidet accessory in Toto's Z series catching fire.

"Fortunately nobody was using the toilets when the fire broke out and there were no injuries," a company spokesman said.

"The fire would have been just under your buttocks," she added.

Toto is a pioneer of high-tech toilets with built-in bidets, which are popular in Japan.

The Z series features a pulsating massage spray, a power dryer, a "tornado wash" flush, and a lid that opens and closes automatically.

It is not sold outside Japan.

The offending loos were all manufactured between May 1996 and December 2001.

I suppose like most things from Japan, the toilet screams out "Tornado Wash!" before performing this technique?
