Late last year, there was a case involving a teenaged girl who had been fighting depression. The problem is, she ended up committing suicide by hanging, and the cause of it was her childhood friend's mother. The mother had pretended to be a boy and gained the girl's confidence and then turned against her and told her that she should kill herself, and that, unfortunately, is exactly what she did. All of this took place through MySpace.

Now, the mother (the accused and admitted) is about to face the music:

The original story had a polarizing effect on the people here and in the public, and I have no doubt this will do the same, but let's see what happens, shall we?

Personally, I believe this is one step in the right direction.

All i'm going to say on the matter (because I fail to see the point in debating this as it's been debated to death and my opinion won't change) is that i'm glad to see her facing court.

And I do hope she sees jail time for it.

Always nice to see justice working the way it's supposed to.

Lori Drew, 49, of suburban St. Louis, who allegedly helped create a MySpace account in the name of someone who didn't exist to convince Megan Meier she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans, was charged with conspiracy and fraudulently gaining access to someone else's computer.

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006, allegedly after receiving a dozen or more cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

Salvador Hernandez, assistant agent in charge of the Los Angeles FBI office, called the case heart-rending.

"The Internet is a world unto itself. People must know how far they can go before they must stop. They exploited a young girl's weaknesses," Hernandez said. "Whether the defendant could have foreseen the results, she's responsible for her actions."

Drew was indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress on the girl.

Maybe this will put the end to people that think they can go on the internet then say, act and do whatever they want without fear of recourse.

This may stop some people, but I doubt it will have a seriously big affect on the internet culture as a whole. This won't stop Anonymous, for example. (But then again, what can?)

But this raises the question...again...can you sue someone for flaming you over the internet?

I remember this article. I remember the original thread being long, and full of posters attacking each other for their opinions.


She deserves at least a manslaughter charge.

Only a sudden outbreak of hot female nymphomania, or sexy gynoid love machines, could stop anonymous, and that's not happening any time soon.

You can't charge someone for manslaughter when the victim committed suicide.
