Pics used in sigs

My question is whether it is wrong or not to use someone else's artwork in your own sig. Say, off DeviantArt, which is a public place, right? Is it okay as long as you include the artist's username? Do you HAVE to ask the artist if you can use it? I would be proud myself if someone wanted to use my work, but you never know.

I'd say if you give them credit and a link to their DevArt account that should be good... but some people can be very touchy about that.
It wouldn't hurt to at least make the attempt to contact them and ask permission.
