my gateway finally died, it turns on but no harddrive activity, but I have a Dell Inspirion 600 on the way, should be what i need for my graphics programs and of course games, (kid of noticed more games made my gateway crash, they wanted something like a Nvidea while the comp only had a radeon)
least it's not an apple this time

Games run on both NVidia and ATI cards. The problem was the card you were probably using in the Gateway was the crappiest one they could find.
You happen to have the specs on your new Dell?

What's so bad about a Dell? The text you are reading was typed from a Dell.Spoon wrote:Ugh dell.

Had a couple of friends that had nothing but endless trouble with dell and their cheap arse parts. Its not personal experience but considering I only have custom pc's I wouldn't buy a dell anyway

I don't know, most of my firend's have dells and they been pretty decent.
anyway it's a Dell Inspiron 6000 1GB of RAM, 80GB HD, P4 1.73GHz, WiFi, DVD-CD/RW and Nvidea card. compared to what i had, a 40 GB gateway with a radeon and just a cd rom drive, it works for me.

I'd rather sell my soul to the devil than buy any kind of pre-made machine.

No, like I should talk. My computer is 7 years old. 733 MHz for life!!!!

But the point is, I made it. It was my first machine that I ever built, with a good college friend's help, and it still works like a charm. Along the way, I added a DVD RW, more RAM, and a new fan for the video card, a GeForce 2 32Mb.
And it's died on me several times. When that happened, I just reformatted. Worst I ever lost was a few mp3's that I don't even remember the names of now.
My old computer, which I don't remember the specs of because it was handed down to me when my dad got a better one when I was high school, it's hard drive ate it a while ago, so I bought a new hard drive, 8 Gb, which is huge for this old machine, for about $10.
When they go on you, buy the parts, don't throw away a perfectly good machine for yet another crummy pre-made one that will leave you hanging as well.
Oh, and always go with a Seagate Hard drive.
Buy my RiD toys! They're awesome, I promise!!!!

I'm in the process of doing exactly that with my old HP. The MB is giving some of the classic sign of impending failure, so I've got a brand new MB and case ready for a quick rebuild as soon as a couple of other parts show up.. I'm done buying factory computers with some of the nonsense going on with the new ones.

It's always nice to hear from one of the enlightened.
What will the specs be of your new machine when it's all arrived, and how much did it cost? I really want a new machine but my money's tight. What sites do you order from?

Every machine I've ever owned was built by a friend of mine. On this current machine I actually got to do some of the installing.

How long did you have the Gateway for? My stepfather had one, and he had the motherboard fail several times, and he tried to replace it several times too. He also had to replace the moniter once on the same machine. I think he had it for about a year and a half at least.Grendel wrote:my gateway finally died, it turns on but no harddrive activity, but I have a Dell Inspirion 600 on the way, should be what i need for my graphics programs and of course games, (kid of noticed more games made my gateway crash, they wanted something like a Nvidea while the comp only had a radeon)

I had it for about 2 years, but bought it off my brother after he had it for 2 years, so it's about 4-5 years total
my first laptop, an HP, lasted me 3 years
as far as building one, I'm slowely peicing together a PC, more as a project to kind of learn how to do it better, but I primarily use laptops as I'm always somewhere else, classes, library, whatever, and as far as building a laptop goes, I have a friedn who repairs PC's for a living, and he won't go near the insides of a laptop.
The Dell came in finally now, everything seems to be working well, as I slowely move everything from the gateway's hard drive to the Dell.
anyone know if there's anything you can use to access a harddrive from another laptop without needing the other laptop? right now it's slow going since the gateway only stays on for about 15 mintues at a time maybe
