I wanted to get some input on this.
I've seen it discussed that scorponok does not show a robot mode in the film.
Has it occurred to anyone that the scorpion mode might actually be his robot mode. supporting evidence would firstly be the fact that he transforms from a part of Blackout's alt mode. Scorponok's alt mode might simply be that portion of the helicopter. Secondly, in the prequel novel, scorponok is described as having a tail and pinchers and this is before he has ever been on earth. Could the body structure of his robot mode be more like a scorpion than a humanoid?
The second point is supported by the fact that bonecrusher is written with a stabbing tail on his back in the prequel. When he assumes an alt mode for earth, his robot mode keeps this attribute. Could we assume that bonecrusher would keep his tail weapon in robot mode no matter what his chosen alt mode?
The one thing that is clearly wierd about this theory is that it suggests that scorponok is already a scorpion before earth. But maybe hes just similar to a scorpion, and scans a scorpion on earth so he can alter his robot mode for the desert terrain.
Just speculating. I'm curious what people think of this.
Scorponok robot mode. (some prequel spoilers)

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I think he was designed originally as part Soundwave minion, part breastmaster/powermaster homage. They couldn't or simply decided against incorporating that aspect into Blackout's toy design though, and since a Scorponok toy that transformed into a chunk of a non-existant helicopter wouldn't be appealing, they slapped the robot transformation feature into the deluxe figure as an afterthought. That's my suspicion anyhow.
Also, I don't think G1 Scorponok ever came to Earth, did he?

Nope. I'm assuming you mean the Marvel comics then? I read them when I was young but unlike the cartoon it was way too long ago for any of it to stick.

'Afterthought' being the operative word there, I think.
