Seems we lost out with Prime's Faceplate...

Realistically organics have mouths for the consumption of food which we turn into energy.
Giant robots would no doubt have their own way of generating energy which would most likely negate the need for a mouth.
Which really negates the need for a head as well as they shouldn't need optics either but rely on sensors distributed throughout the body.
It's just mankind's obsession with making things that resemble mankind that has us thinking that alien species, be it organic or metal, resemble in some form or fashion, the human form.

So, does our species have some sort of inherent arrogance?

I believe the mouth issue falls under the God theory. The first Autobot was made in the image of Primus. And Primus is God.

Primus is a God of Transformers, he's NOT one of the many Gods associated with humans.
Theory blown!

That's blasphemy.

Do we need to take this to the Philosopher's Forum?

Yes.
Case in point, we're discussing alien species looking like us as opposed to it being us who resemble them.

If the fans can't collectively stand behind something (like we did with Peter Cullen), how they hell could they have possibly made choices to please the masses?
If you polled fans about what the movie Transformers should look like before any designs were ever shown, I'd wager that very few would have come up with the designs we got.
I suspect that many people are supporting the designs not because they're good, but because what else are they gonna do? People want to like this movie and will justify the choices made. You can't seriously blame a divide in fandom for what the movie turned out to be. Oh, poor confused movie guys. If they wanted to know what people wanted to see, they only needed to look at the successful Transformers series of the past, and then come up with something that respected that and stayed close, instead of reinventing the wheel as something resembling a metal wasp shoved through a meat grinder. The makers of this movie did what they wanted to do. There's generally an element of ego in this, that they know better and need to make it their own. Any concessions to fans were minor, yet some of the movie people act like they were doing us a favor and we should be thankful. Screw that; if they want our money, they have to earn it. But they're gonna get the money anyway because this movie has been well-hyped, meaning they will assume all their choices were right and all the whiny fans won't matter a damn.

Dude, the discussion's gonna continue up until and way after the movie. Let's beat a dead horse, make some glue, grill up some horse steaks.... Seriously, people who keep saying this is beating a dead horse are beating a dead horse, themselves.

Probably not, after the movie a new thread wil begin and it will either be "I loved primes mouth" or "I hated primes mouth" this thread needs to die because it is about the mouth being in the movie in general and all viewpoints have been beaten to death about why or why not have it in the movie.

I feel kind of like I'm repeating myself, but...
Well, the previoius three on Cartoon Network wouldn't work at all on the big screen because the designs even moved awkwardly in animation. Beast Machines is too weird. That leaves us with two choices. First is the original show that was cancelled 20 years but revived during the 80s nostalgia wave And then there's Beast Wars, the one where Prime didn't have a faceplate on all the time on they went through with some rather different designs. So, which one?
The whiny fans don't matter a damn. They CANNOT focus on appealing to the fans that already exist. They are trying to branch out to reach people who wouldn't normally want to see a TF movie because they actually want to make money off of this, something they wouldn't do if they did whatever the fans wanted.

Ok, people. For one all of you bickering over Prime's mouth with no face plate really need to get over it.
Seriously, for one its Bay's movie. Be happy the guy is even doing it and take it for what it is. Things change, generations change, and so do the Transformers. If you could sit there and watch Beast Wars and put up with their bad memory of how the Autobots and the Decepticons got to earth along with Beast Machines have that whole crap about "The Oracle".
Now then, let me also point out that if any of you read any of the "Original" Transformer comics from G1-G2 line, you may have made not of the fact in the comics, Prime had a mouth under that plate of his.
I also have had someone state that in the 20th Anniversary figure that he also has a Mouth under the plate. Also, several artists(including myself), have drawn Prime with out a plate on showing his mug under it.
Think about it "Logically", why would Prime's plate move if he didn't have some form of a chin moving it? It seems rather logical to me that even back in the G1 when Prime talked and his plate moved, that there was indeed a mouth under there moving it.
There are the facts, take 'em or leave 'em. Stop complaining, get over it, and enjoy the slagg'in movie for the fact we at least have a live-action movie.
