Should the movie designs become the new paradigm for transformer toys?

Postby roy_flagg00 » Thu May 31, 2007 8:55 am

I am not starting this thread to bash the movie.
I just read "225 deals" for product licenses related to the movie, and this troubles me.
I think the movie might end up being prety good, but I do not like the robot designs or the toys patterned after them.
I am all for diferent ideas and new designs, an I personally hold the beasts wars and beast machines series in very high regard.
But seeing that they are trying to market this movie to the max, I am worried that these type of designs might become the new paradigm for what transformers are going to look like.
In comparison, the classics line is way superior, but I want to know what everyone else thinks.
Would we rather see a second line of classics or the movie toys?

I missed the the transformers kick in the eighties as I was born in '86. I did have a few toys but I did not become a major fan until I heard about this film.

I already had a fairly substantial action figure collection and after seeing a trailer about 6 months ago I got excited and started adding transformers to the ranks.

Now the movie figures are showing up and I must say I am thrilled. The visual aesthetic and articulation are awesome. The automorph gimmick is cool and I'd like to see more of it. I'm very impressed. My opinion might not matter as much to the veteran tf fan...

but I definately think these new toys are an upgrade. I doubt these designs will replace the old ones but I would be fine if it did. I'd like the movie to be the new concept of transformers...

like ultimate x-men is to the original x-men storyline.

Your opinion is just as valid as someone who has been collecting since the beginning. The size of a collection doesn't make one great more of a fan than another

Nor does when they entered into the fandom, presumably. I was born in '90, is my opininion any less valid?

:P

Anyway. The new designs can't become the new standard. It's why theyre so different anyway.

The designs had to be so abstract that they wouldn't resemble past incarnations, and so that future incarnations could carry on the blockiness-style without having to pay the studio lots of money. It's all to save cash, really.

We're safe, we wont see these designs again until TF2. Then maybe TF3. And then I'm pretty sure we're rid of them forever.

Well, it would be a new direct.. and i'm not so sure it would be a bad thing.. it certainly would raise the bar as in terms of detail..but the bug faces are just way too much..

As much as I've gotten to where I can accept most of the movie designs (except for megatron, they're at least more recognizeable as some sort of transformers then when we first started seeing designs, megatron still sucks though) I really hope they don't become the new standard for the franchise, I prefer my TF's to be blocky and transformations to be more apparent, not look like their made from millions of little jigsaw peices that re-scramble to transform.
plus the fact that most of the movie toys i seen so far look like Mcdonald's toys

I think that whether or not you like the movie, it is clear that the paint apps on the figures are not good quality at all, and that is understandable. the designs are dofocult to paint accurately.

On the other hand, I think we might end up seeing some really good custom paint jobs done on these figures.

I don't think movie designs should be Hasbro's only choice (I'm not convicned Takara would even follow suit 100%, anyway), but I wouldn't mind seeing more toys with designs akin to the movie. They could produce more traditional Transformers as well.

I have to admit, Longarm, the only other figure I am going to get besides wreckage, looks great.
I hope Transformers 2 takes a q from these hasbro designs.
Also, I would not mind seeing RID car brothers and maybe Ultra Magnus. They would really fit in well.

I don't mind is SOME TF's will be like that, but not a majority or the entire line. I like my Beasts Wars, Energon, Classics and so on.

It's like Coca-Cola, you can't change it for the heck of it. :-P
