It's late and bed time, so I won't post a full review or anything: but I will say that I went and really enjoyed it. Granted I have a beef with a few parts, as posted above, but on the whole I think it was pretty good and can hopefully give a solid launching point for a reboot of the franchise....

I'm gonna see it Saturday or Sunday, though I'm not a Trekkie or anything. So for a general moviegoer, would you recommend it, based on character development, action, storyline, and special effects?

As a general Movie goer yes I do recommend it. For my fellow Trekkies Go SEE IT! The movie itself feels very Retro in style very 60s yet modern. The enterprise heck all the federation ships in the movie feel Chunky to me, I'm not saying thats a bad thing though. Any fan of trek will notice alot of Paradox's in the timeline including two very big paradox's which I will mention latter today. Every character got there moment in movie so the it didn't focus totally on Kirk and Spock. There's plunty of action starting with the destruction of the Kelvin. They even used a Beasty Boyz song at some point. Just to let you all know Kirk is a true flirt through out the entire movie. Yes Kirk takes the test Three times we only get to see the third! Yes there are two spocks in this movie I'm not gonna say why lets just say something Trekkies hate it invovled.

"my usual salutation would seem to be self severing so I will leave you with simply good luck."

I may have miss quoted but, its a funny line if you think about it after you watch the movie.

It's very good - fresh but familiar, I thought new Spock and bones were channelling the spirits of their old counterparts, I knew the writers 'got' trek when the tradition of the redshirts was upheld (skydiving scene).

Only real complaint is does there need to be that much lens flare in the majority of the shots.

This Was by far the best film I've seen in a long time (probably my favorite Star Trek movie now), and the first great Trek film since First Contact.

It's great to see that the odd numbered Star Trek Movies no longer all suck

I loved it! I actually went in expecting laggy moments of plot build up. It was non-stop geeky goodness the whole way through.

The time paradox was simply done and only those who think too long and hard on it will have issue. It certainly had all the flare of the other Trek genre, with great nods to the fandom, but with all the flash of modern tech which didn't detract and wasn't too overt. And it was certainly nice to see a NZLer in a main role - Bones!

All up, a solid movie, well worth a 9 out of 10.
Something memorable here.

It's only a minor one - the characters are the same - the universe is almost the same and to be honest the series of films were getting stale and needed to be refreshed.

Alrighty then. Overall: I enjoyed the movie.

Spoilers Ahoy.

I kinda knew they were going to do this, the whole thing is a reboot of the Star Trek universe so it isn't tied down to any of the canon from TOS, TNG or beyond, which is pretty cool I guess. Part of me wonders if the two universes will now run concurrently or whether the original universe will be neglected in favour of the new one.

I wasn't really happy about the fate of Romulus in the old universe, as they've been my favourite race for a long time. It could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what they do with the Romulans in the future, but I guess that remains to be seen. The big question, will the same thing happen in this new branch of canon? But I doubt we'll get from the TOS timeline to the TNG timeline any time soon so I might be waiting a long long time to find out...

The actor playing McCoy was really hamming it up with all those McCoyisms... It was so bad...

The movie also felt very "Star Wars" at times, it didn't have the usual clean Star Trek feel to it.

Sulu was awesome.

The overall story wasn't anything to sing praises about, it was a pretty standard actiony affair that didn't try too hard and just leads the audience along at a comfortable pace. If I had to describe it in one word, the word would be 'bland'.

It was really surprising to see how Kirk was basically comic relief for 3/4 of the movie. He wasn't anywhere remotely close to being the OTT manly man the TOS Kirk was.

And my closing thought: Ohura is such a ho.

I don't think it was much of a retcon: they pretty much state in the movie that this is now an alternate Star Trek universe. I'm not thrilled with it either, but it is a good way to get a clean slate and not have to worry too much about old cannon. It was meant to reboot/revive the franchise and I think it has a good shot at doing just that....

Saw it last night, I think the only problem I had with the movie was, and it's not so much a problem with the movie itself, but with JJ Abrams style directing.

The shaky cam works, and while it wasn't annoying and overused like in Cloverfield, when you did notice it, it was annoying as heck, mostly during the bride scenes, past that it worked.

That plus the closing music really was a great ending to the movie, IMO.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, it wasn't perfect - Nero is probably the most generic of all 'Villains Of The Week' of the Trek films, to be sure - but I still enjoyed it nonetheless, and I think it comes pretty close to Nick Meyer's Trek films in entertainment value, if nothing else.

The performances outside of Bana were for the most part excellent - and I liked the fact that for the first time since "The Undiscovered Country", the Enterprise crew BEYOND Kirk, Spock and McCoy actually gets a fair amount of screen time themselves. The 'Spock and Uhura' thing struck me as a bit odd, but given how the writers basically spelled out Spock's struggle with his human half early on (not to mention a certain continuity-rewriting cataclysm that occurs about halfway through the film), I cut it some slack.

Nimoy was great, as usual, and I was frankly surprised at how substantial a role he actually plays in the film. I also liked Ben Cross as Sarek - granted, the script takes liberties with the character from the established nature of Spock and Sarek's relationship in the previous timeline, but again, I choose to overlook it in the aftermath of what happens to both of them.

There's several nice references to the franchise's past here - including bits of dialogue and even character history first brought up in "The Wrath of Khan" - without beating the audience over the head with them.

This may actually be the first GREAT odd-numbered Star Trek movie, IMO.
I got yer new Captain America right here!

I'm not terribly happy with comments like this made about the movie. You have to remember that Star Trek is like your average comic book hero: it's almost a part of the fabric of pop culture. And like all pop culture heros, they need to get reinvented every so often as to appeal to a new audience. (Anyone remember how much fandom went nuts when the quote/unquote "new" designs for the Transformer characters in the live action movie were leaked? Sure, you do.)

In any case, to anyone who might hold this opinion, consider this: this movie is to the original Trek series and the six TOS movies what Batman Begins/The Dark Knight are to the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman movies: a fresh imagining of an old property. If looked at in that fashion, I'm sure you'll like this.

This, in my rambling, roundabout way, is my way of saying I just got back from seeing it, and can pretty much declare it to be an [EXPLETIVE of your choice] good film no matter how you want to look at it.

Also, considering it has both the GI Joe and ROTF trailers in front of it, it's guaranteed to get a lot of folks in the theater on that aspect alone.

:BOT: I f*****' loved this movie! And I'm a non-Trekkie. Every second of that movie was entertaining. I can't get enough of that opening sequence, it's just so epic and heartbreaking. Damn, I love Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman.

And it has the best use of "Sabatoge" ever! I geeked out over that moment as well.

Can't wait to watch it again!

Also, I didn't realize Winona Ryder was Spock's mother and Greg Grunberg was Kirk's stepdad. :CON:

I was reading an article in some waiting room a couple months ago, and the movie was actually designed to a refresh of the basic Star Trek aesthetic. Basicly, the property has been going down in popularity for several years, so the movie is made the way is in order to spice it up for a new generation of fans. So, you pretty much hit the nail on the head, Darth. I would much rather deal a little bit of change than to lose a whole franchise completely.

Yeah, even though Enterprise managed to be great in its final season, by then it was pretty much too late to save it, and it was said at the time that it needed some time and a fresh pair of eyes to make it good again. Well, looks like that's what happened.

Although it has to be said that one of the very few things I dislike about the movie is the way the characters go out of their way to say that things will be different from how they might have been because of the whole wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey situation. It may have been necessary to set things out on this new course, but the way it happens makes it too obvious that the reason why they did it is to tell the audience that this won't be like the Star Trek they all remember.

Overall, not a bad movie. Not great, but no something to toss into the recycling bin anytime soon. As Redimus pointed out elsewhere, there is a bit of a stretch in the science, specifically the idea that a supernova would threaten the entire galaxy. A solar system, yes, but an enitre galaxy? I'm no astronomer or physicist, but that strikes me as a very large star. And Kirk going from cadet to captain? Gary Stu, anyone?

It's true that it was probably a wise move to drop Rick Berman from the process, but personally, I'm not sure a reboot was completely neccessary. Beast Wars is a good example of a fresh perspective on a existant continuity (and yes, I'm aware BW was initially intended to be its own continuity).

This is totally off subject, but I just reread my post and noticed how many words I left out of the sentences-wow, that is bad.

Anyway, I am still yet to see the movie. I'm excited to see it. Hopefully, the positive greatly outweigh the negatives. From what you all have been saying, I expect the movie to be a nice piece on entertainment.
